4.1.2 Connecting with an agent

The controller performs remote control operations while it is connected with an agent. Once the controller establishes a connection with an agent, the agent's screen appears in the Remote Control window. When the controller is connected to more than one agent, Remote Control Manager opens as many Remote Control windows as there are connected agents.

A maximum of 255 controllers can be connected to one agent at the same time.

This subsection describes how you can connect with an agent, check the connection status, and set up the remote control mode.

Note that the menu bar of this window disappears once a connection is established with an agent. To use a menu, right-click the title bar to display Remote Control Menu, and choose the menu name.

(1) Establishing a connection

There are four ways of establishing a connection with an agent:

In any method, if you specify that the agent is to display the connection request, a message dialog box indicating the connection request rejection is displayed on the controller.

If security settings have been specified on the agent side, the User Authentication dialog box appears when an attempt is made to connect to the agent. Authentication will succeed if the correct authentication information is entered in the dialog box. Note that the Change User Name and Password dialog box also appears when the Change the user name and password when a connection is established check box on the General page in the Add User dialog box is selected. If the dialog box appears, enter the new user name and password.

If you want to enter a domain with a user name, use the domain-name\user-name or user-name@domain-name format.

For details on how to specify agent security, see 3.4.4 Authentication settings.

If a connection attempt fails, an error message appears, and the system will reattempt to establish connection based on your option settings.

The following explains each connection method.

(a) From the address bar

This method connects agent specified on the address bar in the Remote Control window. The address bar consists of an agent button and an address box. If the address bar is not displayed, you can display it by one of the following methods:

You can use the address bar to connect to an agent via one of the two methods shown below.

Selection from the agent menu
Click the Agent button ([Figure]) in the Remote Control window. The agent menu is then displayed. You can select an agent from the agent menu. The agent menu is a menu-form list of the agents that are currently included in the network. If you register frequently used agents on the agent menu, you will able to connect with them more easily.

  3. Click the Connect button.
This connects your system to the agent and closes the Remote Control Agent Specification dialog box. If you are already connected to an agent, a new Remote Control window opens.
(c) Searching for an agent via a dialog box

From the dialog box for searching agents, you specify the connection destination by searching for machines that are running Remote Control Agent on the network.

For details on agent searching such as how to specify the search parameters and view the search results or limitations of the search, see C. How to Use the Find Agent Facility.

Once you connect with one of the agents identified by the search, the system deletes the information about any other agents. If you want to save the search results, we recommend that you conduct your agent search from the Agent Manager window. For details on agent searches from the Agent Manager window, see 4.4.3(3) Searching for and reading the organizational information about agents.

To search for agents and connect to an agent from the Remote Control window:

  1. In the Remote Control window, choose File and then Connect. (Alternatively, on the toolbar, click the Connect button.)
The Remote Control Agent Specification dialog box appears.
  2. Click Search.
The Search Agents dialog box appears. You can also open the Search Agents dialog box by going to the File menu and choosing Search.

(3) Checking the connection status with the agent

When connected to an agent, the controller shows an icon ([Figure]) on the status bar, indicating that an agent is connected. This icon is called the transmission icon. The yellow PC at the top of the icon represents receiving data from the agent, whereas the blue PC at the bottom represents sending data to the agent. During data transmission, the relevant PC in the icon illuminates. Placing your pointer over the icon pops up the transmission data count.

The status bar also shows the remote control mode, the amount of time that has elapsed since connection was established, and the number of data transfers. If the status bar is not displayed, you can display it using one of the following methods.

You can configure property settings to show or hide this information. There are two ways to show this information.

(4) Setting the remote control mode

Set the remote control mode of the controller to conform to the contents of remote control operations you need to perform on the agent. However, if the agent side defines a higher level of permission, the mode of the controller may be adjusted when connection is established. For details on the remote control mode, see 3.1 Remote control mode.

There are three ways of setting the remote control mode:

You can view the set remote control mode from the status bar and toolbar of the Remote Control window.
