Address displays the address of the currently connected agent.
  2. In the Name box, enter the name you want to give to the agent.
You are required to specify a name. The name specified here is displayed in the Name box of the agent list.
  3. Specify whether to save the connection options that are set on the agent.
Select the Save connection option check box if you want to save connection options for the agent that is being connected. By default, this check box is cleared. For how to set connection options on an agent, see 4.4.6 Setting connection options for each agent.
  4. Click OK.
The agent is added to the end of the agent list.
At this point, the added agent will not be shown in the agent menu of the Remote Control window. To add it to the menu, start the Agent Manager window and save the information.

(2) Creating the list in the Agent Manager window

The Agent Manager window enables you to create a folder to group agents. Folders can be created in a hierarchical structure. You can also insert separators in the agent menu of the Remote Control window, to make the agent organization easier to understand.

Perform the following procedures to create folders and agents in the agent list, and insert separators into the agent menu. Folders and agents are created in the following locations, depending on the item you select at the beginning of the procedure.

When you select the root or folder
At the end of the hierarchical level under the selected root or folder

When you select an agent or separator
Immediately after the selected agent or separator (in the same hierarchical level)
(a) Creating a folder

To create a folder in the agent list:

  1. In the agent list, select the location where you want to create the folder.

  3. In the General page, enter the Name, Host name or IP address and Description for the agent.
You must specify a Name and Address for the agent. You can enter up to 260 characters for Name and Description. In the Address box, set the IP address or host name of the agent.
Also, from the Setup page, you can customize the connection options of the agent. The connection options can also be changed after creating the agent. For details on the connection options, see 4.4.6(1) Connection options.
  4. Click OK.
The agent is created in the agent list.
(c) Creating a separator

Perform the following steps when inserting a separator in order to make the agent organization easier to understand.

  1. In the agent list, select the location where you want to insert the separator.
  2. From the File menu, choose New and then Separator.
    A separator is inserted.

(3) Searching for and reading the organizational information about agents

The Agent Manager window allows you to search for agent machines on the network and add connectable agents to the agent list. The procedure for searching for and adding agents to the agent list has the following three stages:

  1. Create the Network icon defining the range of addresses you want to search.
  2. Use the Network icon to launch the search for agents.
  3. Add the agents detected to the agent list.
Operational procedures for each of the above stages are shown below. For details on the find agent facility, including how to define the search range, how to check the search results, and search restrictions, see C. How to Use the Find Agent Facility.
(a) Creating the Network icon

The Network icon defines the range of agent searches. You can define a scope of addresses within the same subnet for each Network icon. Creating a Network icon on the agent list will allow you to search the same network area repeatedly. Additionally, if you choose Network from the Agent menu of the Remote Control window, you can search for agents from within the window.

You can create a Network icon using the same procedure as that for creating other icons (for folders and agents).

  1. In the agent list, select the location where you want to create the Network icon.
  2. From the File menu, choose New and then Network.
The New Network dialog box appears.

    [Figure]

  3. In the General page, enter the name, address, and description.
You must specify the name and address. You can enter up to 260 characters for Name and Description. For the Address box, specify the network range you want to search for agents. For instructions on specifying the search range, see C.1 Setting the search range.
Also, from the Setup page, you can customize the search method of the agent. For instructions on customizing the search, see C.3 Customizing the search method.
  4. Click OK.
The Network icon is created in the agent list.
(b) Searching for agents

Double-click the Network icon to display the Search Agents dialog box and initiate a search for agents in the network range specified in the Address box.

Click Details to expand the dialog box and display the search status.

Figure 4-45 Agent page

[Figure]

The contents of the Search Agents dialog box are almost the same as when searching for agents from Remote Control. However, if you search from the Agent Manager window, you can select the Close this dialog box when search is finished check box to automatically close the dialog box when the search finishes.

You can only add those agents shown in the Agent page of the Search Agents dialog box to the Agent Manager window. For this reason, when the search is completed, adjust the contents of the Agent page before closing the dialog box.

For example, if you want to manage the organization of all the machines on the network, regardless of whether Remote Control Agent is running or not, you need to select all the option items, from Awaiting connection to Not responding. If you only want to add the currently connectable machines to the agent list, select the Awaiting connection option only. For details on the agent statuses, see C.2 The status of found agents.

(c) Adding the search results to the agent list

Following the search, if you close the Search Agents dialog box, the agents shown in the Agent page of the dialog box will be added under the Network icon and shown as Found Agent icons. Even if you click Close in the middle of a search those agents already identified will be added to the list.

Figure 4-46 Agent Manager window

[Figure]

The system shows the Found Agent icons temporarily as search results, and does not save the information. (If you close the Agent Manager window, the icons will be deleted.) To save the information about the found agents, you need to drag and drop the icons into another folder. This will make it possible to save each icon as an item in the agent list. After completing this process, you can treat it like a normal agent, and change its name or description information.

(4) Importing agent information from the hosts file

Using the hosts file will allow you to add all the agents defined in the file to the agent list in a single operation.

To import agent information from the hosts file:

  1. In the agent list, select the location you want to add the agents to (i.e., to read the hosts file information into).
The agents are added to the following locations in accordance with the choices you make.
When you select the root or folder
At the end of the hierarchical level under the selected root or folder
When you select an agent or separator
Immediately after the selected agent or separator (in the same hierarchical level)
  2. From the File menu choose Import From and then Hosts File.
The Open File dialog box appears.
  3. Select the hosts file you want to use, and click Open.
All the agents defined in the hosts file are added to the agent list. The contents of a hosts file are processed according to the following rules:
    • The leading and trailing spaces and tabs are ignored.
    • Lines starting with the number sign (#) will be treated as comment lines and ignored.
    • The first space or tab to the next space or tab will be regarded as the name.
    • Aliases will be ignored.
    • If a line defining an IP address and host name contains a number sign (#), the following character string will be regarded as a description of the agent.

(5) Using the backup files

You can save the agent list information in a backup file with any name.

The following describes how to save the agent list information, and how to read the backup file to recover the agent list.

(a) Saving to a file

To save the agent list information to a file, choose Save As from the File menu and save with a different name.

(b) Importing from a file

To use the backup file to recover the agent list:

  1. In the agent list, select the location you want to read the file information to.
The agent list information is added to the following locations depending on what item you select.
When you select the root or folder
At the end of the hierarchical level under the selected root or folder
When you select an agent or separator
Immediately after the selected agent or separator (in the same hierarchical level)
  2. From the File menu, choose Import From and then System File.
The Open File dialog box appears.
  3. Select the backup file and click Open.
The agent list information is recovered and added to the specified location.
