4.4.4 Receiving connection requests from agents

In the Agent Manager window, you can receive connection requests from agents.

When a connection request is received from an agent, you can connect to the agent using the Agent Manager window, as explained below.

When a connection request is received from an agent, the Agent Manager window pops up showing the agent that has issued the connection request as an icon in the Agent List. If an agent issues connection requests to multiple controllers simultaneously, that agent is identified as an icon in the Agent List on all the destination controllers. Double-clicking this icon initiates a connection establishment process to the agent. This allows you to respond quickly to connection requests from agents.

The following figure shows how the controller responds to a connection request from the agent.

Figure 4-47 How the controller responds to a connection request from the agent

[Figure]

A pop-up message will also be displayed if the controller is configured to display pop-up messages. For further information on pop-up messages, see (5) Operations performed to confirm the reception of a connection request below. Clicking Connect on the pop-up message window initiates a connection establishment process to the agent.

When an agent that has issued connection requests to multiple controllers simultaneously is connected to one of the controllers, the other controllers automatically close the pop-up message and, in the Agent List, deactivate the icon of the agent that has issued the connection request. If the controller version is 06-51 or earlier, however, the pop-up message will not be closed automatically.

The Agent Manager window settings needed to receive connection requests from agents are explained below.

(1) Creating a request server
(2) Request server attribute settings
(3) Starting and stopping the request server

(1) Creating a request server

A request server is required in the Agent List in order to receive connection requests from agents.

To create the request server:

  1. In the Agent List, specify a location where the Request Server icon is to be created.
  2. From the File menu, choose New and then Request server.
The New Request Server dialog box opens.

    [Figure]

  3. In the General page, fill the Name, Port number, and Description fields.
Entries into the Name and Port number fields are mandatory. You can enter up to 260 characters for Name and Description. For Port number, specify the port number to use for connecting from the agent. Specify an integer from 0 to 65535. By default, this is set to 30006.
  4. Specify the items in the Setup page as required.
Specify request server attributes. For details on the attributes, see (2) Request server attribute settings. You can specify these settings at a later time.
  5. Click the OK button.
A request server is created and the Request Server icon ([Figure]) is displayed at the specified location.
You can change the name and attributes of the Request Server icon as in the case of folders, agents, and other items. For details on changing the attributes of the request server, see 4.4.8(4) Changing request server attributes.

(2) Request server attribute settings

The behavior when a connection request is received from an agent is set to the request server as attributes. To explain these attributes, the Setup page of the New Request Server dialog box is used as an example. The same items are set when changing the attributes of the request server and setting the properties of folders.

Start request server when the agent manager starts.
Select this check box to start the request server automatically when the Agent Manager starts. By default, this check box is cleared.

Port number for file transfer
Specify a port number for file transfer as an integer from 0 to 65535. The default port number is 30007. The specification of a port number is mandatory.

Beep
Select this check box when you want your computer to beep when the controller receives a connection request from an agent. By default, this check box is selected.

Display in front of all windows
Select this check box to display the Agent Manager window in front of any other window when the controller receives a connection request from an agent. By default, this check box is selected.
When the Agent Manager window is displayed in front, the focus is placed on the Request Agent icon.

Display a pop-up message
Select this check box to display a pop-up message when the controller receives a connection request from an agent. By default, this check box is cleared.
With the settings shown above, the Agent Manager window is displayed in front and a pop-up message will be displayed. From the popup message of the dialog box, you can establish connection to the agent that has issued the connection request. If you are using the controller as the help desk, select this check box.
For further information on pop-up messages, see (5) Operations performed to confirm the reception of a connection request below.

Start the remote control
Select this check box to automatically start the remote control when a connection request is received from the agent. By default, this check box is cleared.

Request agent
To connect to the agent that issued the request and remote control the agent, the connection options are set in advance. Clicking the Setup button opens the Request Agent Settings dialog box. Specify connection options in this dialog box. For details on the connection options, see 4.4.6(1) Connection options.

(3) Starting and stopping the request server

Before you can receive connection requests from agents, you will need to start the Agent Manager window and start the request server. You can determine whether the request server is active or inactive, based on the way the icon is displayed.

[Figure] : Active (blue)

[Figure] : Inactive (red)

How to start and stop the request server is explained below.

(a) Starting the request server

You can start the request server automatically or manually.

Setting for automatic start
If you did not specify automatic start when creating the request server, you can specify automatic start by use of the following method:
  1. In the Agent List, choose the Request Server icon.
  2. Choose File, and then Properties.
  3. In the Properties dialog box, open the Setup page and select the Start request server when the agent manager starts check box.

Setting for manual start
To start the request server manually:
  1. In the Agent List, select a Request Server icon.
  2. Choose File, and then Start.
    The selected request server starts.

One of the following conditions causes an error and the request server cannot start.

(b) Stopping the request server

To stop the request server:

  1. In the Agent List, select a Request Server icon.
  2. Choose File, and then Stop.
A message dialog box is displayed, asking you if you are sure you want to stop the request server.
  3. Click Yes.
    The selected request server stops.

When one of the following operations is performed, the active request server stops.

(4) Request Agent icon display

When the request server receives a connection request, the agent that has issued the connection request is added under the request server. This added agent is referred to as a request agent. The following screen is an example that includes an added Request Agent icon.

Figure 4-50 Example of added Request Agent icon

[Figure]

When the request server stops, the Request Agent icons that were active under the request server are deleted automatically. The Request Agent icon is active as long as the agent keeps the connection request effective. It becomes inactive when the connection request is canceled.

A Request Agent icon is a temporary representation of an agent that has issued a connection request. This icon as is does not represent information that can be saved (the icon will be deleted when the Agent Manager window is closed). If you want to save information about the agent that has issued a connection request, move the Request Agent icon to another folder via a drag-and-drop operation. Once you have moved the Request Agent icon to another folder, you can save the icon as an item in the Agent List. You can also treat the agent as an ordinary agent and can change the name and description of the agent.

(5) Operations performed to confirm the reception of a connection request

The display of a Request Agent icon is a method used to confirm the reception of a connection request. The following operations also serve the purpose of this confirmation:

Name
Displays the host name (IP address if the host name cannot be obtained) of the agent that has issued the connection request.

Address
Displays the IP address of the agent that has issued the connection request.

Description
Displays the comment that was entered on the agent that has issued the connection request.

Connect
Starts Remote Control Manager, and then connects to the agent that issued the connection request.

The pop-up message will be closed automatically when remote control starts or when the connection request is canceled. Also, when the agent issued connection requests to multiple connections, the pop-up message automatically closes when connecting to other controllers. If the controller version is 06-51 or earlier, however, the pop-up message will not be closed automatically.

It is also possible to start remote control on the agent that has issued a connection request, by activating Remote Control Manager when the controller receives the connection request. You can configure the request server to perform the above operation when creating the request server. You can also configure the request server by selecting the Request Server icon, and then going to the File menu, choosing the Properties menu item, and setting the information in the displayed Properties dialog box. For further information on these settings, see (2) Request server attribute settings.
