5.1.7 Modifying system configuration information

When you add or remove a relay system or managed computer, the facility for automatically registering the system configuration automatically notifies the managing server, and the information in the System Configuration window is updated accordingly. This subsection describes how to modify system configuration information manually from the managing server.

To change the host names (or IP addresses if IP addresses are the ID key for operations) of managing servers, relay systems, or management relay servers, you must have all jobs completed or deleted beforehand.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Changing system configuration information from a file

This process involves outputting the existing system configuration information to a file, updating the file contents, and then creating system configuration information based on the updated file.

Even when changing only some aspects of the system configuration, the file from which you create the system configuration must contain information for every host that you want to remain in the system. Any host that is not in the file will be deleted from the system configuration.

To delete a host, delete the information associated with that host from the file.

For details about how to output system configuration information to a file, and how to create system configuration information from a file, see 5.1.4 Updating system configuration information output to a file.

(2) Changing the system configuration in the System Configuration window

The following describes how to change system configuration information from the System Configuration window. For details about how to search for the hosts you want to change or delete, see 6.1.1 Searching for hosts by name.

(a) Moving hosts

When you move a management relay server or relay system, all its subordinate hosts also move with it. You can move multiple hosts at once by selecting them in the right pane of the System Configuration window.

You can move a host by using Remote Install Manager on the management relay server that directly manages it.

To move a host or hosts:

  1. Make the System Configuration window the active window, and select the host or hosts you want to move.

The hosts you select are highlighted in the System Configuration window.

  2. From the Edit menu, select Cut.

The selected hosts are cut. After clicking Cut, do not double-click the Network node in the left pane. If you double-click this node, the Paste command becomes unavailable in the Edit menu, and you will be unable to paste the hosts. In this case, click Cut again.

  3. Select the destination for the hosts.

The location you selected is highlighted in the System Configuration window.

  4. From the Edit menu, select Paste.

The hosts you cut are pasted to the selected destination.

Note that you can also move hosts by dragging them to the desired location.

(b) Deleting hosts

You cannot restore a host after deleting it. When you delete a management relay server or relay system, all its subordinate managed computers are also deleted. You can delete multiple hosts by selecting them in the right pane of the System Configuration window.

When you delete a host in the System Configuration window, the Delete Host dialog box appears. If you select the Delete a host from the registered IDs check box in the Delete Host dialog box, the selected host is also deleted from the ID groups in which it is registered. This check box is only available when the selected host is an agent. If the selected host is a management relay server or relay system, you cannot delete it. In this case, use the System Configuration window to delete the agent on the same computer as the management relay server or relay system and its subordinate agents before deleting the management relay server or relay system itself.

To delete hosts:

  1. Make the System Configuration window the active window, and select the host or hosts you want to delete.

The hosts you select are highlighted in the System Configuration window.

  2. From the Edit menu, select Delete.

    A confirmation dialog box appears.

  3. Click OK.

    The selected hosts are deleted.

You can also delete hosts by searching for them in the Find dialog box. For details, see 6.1.4 Deleting found hosts from system configuration information.

(c) Changing host names

When you change a host name, the changes are automatically reported to the managing server. The information that has been reported is automatically reflected in the System Configuration window. The host name that was specified can be changed in the System Configuration window. To change the host name, use the management relay server that manages the host.

To change a host name in the System Configuration window:

  1. In the System Configuration window, select the host whose host name is to be changed.

    The selected host is highlighted.

  2. Select File and then Rename.

  3. Specify a name, and press Enter.

The name will be changed to the specified name.

Changing the host name in the System Configuration window also changes the same host name in the Destination window.

(d) Changing host attributes

To change host attributes from a relay system to an agent (or from an agent to a relay system) or modify routes or comments, use the Change Attributes dialog box, which is displayed by selecting File and then Change Attributes.

Note the following when changing host types:

  • Changing the attributes of a host in the System Configuration window also changes the attributes of the same host in the Destination window.

  • You cannot change the host types of management relay servers. For management relay servers, you can change only IP addresses and comments.

Host name

Displays the host name. You can change the host name if IP addresses are the ID key.

IP address

Displays the IP address. You can change the IP address if host names are the ID key.

Type

Select Relay system or Agent as the host type. If you change the host type from Relay system to Agent, all the current hosts under the relay system will be deleted.

Route

Specify a route by separating each host name with an exclamation mark (!). If a non-existent route is specified, the route will not be changed and an error will be returned.

Browse button

Clicking this button displays the Set Path dialog box where you can select a route from the system configuration.

Comment

You can enter a comment of up to 64 single-byte characters.

(3) Changing system configuration information under management relay servers

From the local server, you cannot change information about system configuration under management relay servers. If information about system configuration under management relay servers has been changed, add the changed information to the system configuration information on the local server. To do this, use the facility for automatically registering the system configuration or execute a Get system configuration information job from the local server.

However, you can use the System Configuration window on the local server to change comments about hosts under management relay servers.

If you change the connection destinations of management relay servers or relay systems in a large-scale system with three or more tiers, information about system configuration under the systems you moved might not be reported to the new managing server. If the information has not been reported, from the new managing server, execute a Get system configuration information job for the management relay servers or relay systems that you moved.

(4) Notes on changing system configuration information

The following are notes on changing system configuration information:
