5.1.4 Updating system configuration information output to a file

You can output the system configuration information created in the JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 system to a file called a system configuration information file. You can keep this file as a backup, or edit it using a text editor.

If you want to restore the system configuration from a backup or update the system configuration based on the contents of an edited file, you need to import the system configuration information file into Remote Install Manager.

The following describes how to output a system configuration information file, how to edit the file, and how to apply the contents of the file to the system configuration information.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Outputting system configuration information to a file

You can output the system configuration information displayed in the System Configuration window to a file. This process allows you to modify system configuration information by outputting the existing system configuration information to a file and then editing the file contents.

If managing servers are in a hierarchical structure, the file output by the manager does not contain information about the system configuration under management relay servers. To output information about the system configuration under management relay servers, log in to the management relay servers and then output system configuration information.

To output system configuration information to a file:

  1. In the System Configuration window, from the File menu, select Save to File.

The Save System Configuration dialog box appears. Before you perform this step, click Refresh to refresh the window contents. If the automatic application of system configuration information takes place and the information displayed on screen no longer reflects the underlying data, the correct information might not be output to the file.

  2. Enter a file name, and then click OK.

The system configuration information is output to a file.

The following figure shows an example of system configuration information output to a file:

Figure 5‒1: File output example of system configuration information

[Figure]

When you output the system configuration to a file, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx replaces the IP addresses in the file. If you want to use the output file to manage hosts by their IP addresses, you must use a text editor or similar tool to enter the IP addresses in the file.

(2) Editing system configuration information

In a system configuration information file, you can specify an IP address, host name, host type, creation date and time, comment, route, and other information for each host. Note, however, that you can specify a creation date and time only in JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Manager.

If the display language is Japanese, use a text file in the Shift_JIS encoding format. If the display language is Chinese (simplified characters), use a text file in the GBK encoding format. If the display language is English, use a text file in the ASCII encoding format. You can comment out a line by placing a single-quotation mark (') or hash mark (#) in the first column.

Format
IP-address host-name HID=host-ID,TYPE=host-type,MAC=MAC-address,COMMENT=comment,ROOT=route,DATE=creation-date-and-time
Description

After the IP address and host name, you can place items in any order.

  • IP-address (required)

Set the IP address of the host.

Although the IP address is not part of the information managed JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Manager, you must specify this operand to keep the file format consistent with the TCP/IP hosts file.

You can also use the TCP/IP hosts file directly as a system configuration information file. In this case, all hosts in the file are registered as managed computers.

You can simplify the process of creating a system configuration information file by using the TCP/IP hosts file as the basis and adding the host type (TYPE), comment (COMMENT), and route (ROOT) information for the hosts.

  • host-name (required)

For details about how to specify host names, see 5.1.2 Assigning host names in JP1/IT Desktop Management 2.

  • HID=host-ID

Set a host ID that uniquely identifies the host. You must use the host ID as it appears in the file output when you select Save to File from the File menu in the System Configuration window. Do not specify this operand if no host ID is set for the host in the output file, or the host is a new host.

  • TYPE=host-type

As the host type, enter MANAGER (management relay server), MASTER (relay system), or CLIENT (agent). If you omit this operand, CLIENT is set by default.

If you intend to use the file as both a TCP/IP hosts file and a system configuration information file, specify a hash mark (#) before TYPE, leaving a single-byte space between # and TYPE. The TCP/IP protocol will interpret the information after the hash mark as a comment.

  • MAC=MAC-address

Set the MAC address of the host. Because MAC address information is used by functions such as Wake on LAN, you should not change the value of this operand as a general rule. If you change the value, some functions might not work.

  • COMMENT=comment

Set a comment. The comment cannot contain commas (,). You can enter a maximum of 64 single-byte characters.

  • ROOT=route

When a host is configured below multiple relay servers, set the full path from the highest to lowest relay system using host names, IP addresses, or host IDs. When a host is configured below two or more relay systems and management relay servers, separate them with a backslash (\) or exclamation mark (!). You can omit this operand if the host connects directly to JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Manager.

  • DATE=creation-date-and-time

The date and time when the host will be (or was) first registered on the management server. Specify the date and time in the format MM/DD/YYYY/hh/mm/ss. For YYYY, you can specify a value in the range from 1971 to 2037. For hh, you can specify 0 to 23.

If you omit this operand, the date and time at which you clicked Create from File is set for this parameter in the system configuration information file.

(3) Using a system configuration information file to update system configuration information

To apply the contents of a system configuration information file to the system configuration information:

  1. In the System Configuration window, from the File menu, select Create from File.

A dialog box appears in which you can select a file.

  2. Select the system configuration information file you created, and then click OK.

The system configuration information is updated based on the contents of the system configuration information file.

Note the following when applying the contents of a system configuration information file to the system configuration information:
