5.1.2 Assigning host names in JP1/IT Desktop Management 2
The following describes how to assign host names in JP1/IT Desktop Management 2.

(1) Assigning host names
Host names cannot be longer than 64 bytes.
The following conventions apply when assigning host names:

You can only use single-byte alphanumeric characters (A to Z and a to z), numerals (0 to 9), hyphens (-), and periods (.).

Periods (.) can only be used as a delimiter in domain names.

When using a DNS, specify host names in the format host-name.domain-name. The entire string including the domain name must not exceed 64 bytes.

The host name must begin with an alphabetic character.

You cannot use spaces.

Because host names are not case-sensitive, you cannot use a host name that is the same as another except for case.

You cannot use double-byte characters in host names.

A host name cannot end with a hyphen (-) or period (.).

You cannot use an alias defined in the hosts file as a host name.

In a system that uses host names as the node identification key, each host that uses JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 must have a unique host name.

You cannot use localhost as a host name.
The total length of all host names from the host directly under the managing server (the highest-level host in the system) to the lowest-level host cannot exceed 255 bytes. This includes the host names themselves and the delimiters between them. We also recommend that host names in networks using JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 be unified as all upper-case or lower-case letters because host names are case-sensitive in some systems, such as UNIX systems.
