5.1.6 Collecting system configuration information of the systems under management relay servers

When managing server systems in a hierarchical structure, you cannot use the manager to create or change system configuration information of the systems under the management relay servers. In this case, execute a Get system configuration information job to collect the system configuration information managed by the management relay servers, and add it to the system configuration information for the manager. You can also use the facility for automatically registering the system configuration to collect the information, but to do so you must complete the setup for the higher systems before the setup for the lower systems. Therefore, if you cannot take the setup sequence into account in situations such as during installation or when significantly changing system configuration information, execute a Get system configuration information job to collect the system configuration information.

After collecting system configuration information for the systems under the manager, you can maintain that information by using the facility for automatically registering the system configuration. When information about the system configurations of the systems under a management relay server is changed, the change details are automatically reported from the management relay server and reflected in the system configuration information for the manager.

If you change the connection destinations of relay systems or management relay servers in a large-scale system with three or more tiers, information about the system configurations of the systems under the systems you moved might not be reported to the new managing server. If the information has not been reported, from the managing server, execute a Get system configuration information job on the relay system or management relay server that you moved.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Executing a Get system configuration information job

(a) Creating and executing a job

This subsection explains how to create a job for collecting system configuration information. For operation and setting details, see 10.2 Creating a job.

  1. In the Destination or System Configuration window, select Execute and then Execute Job. Alternatively, in the Job Definition window, select File and then Create Job.

The Define New Job dialog box appears.

  2. In the Define New Job dialog box, select the desired job type (Get system configuration information), and then click the OK button.

The Create Job dialog box appears.

  3. Set the items on each panel.

The types and settings of the panels displayed in the Create Job dialog box are as follows:

    Job panel

    Specifies the job name.

    Destination panel

Specifies the management relay server from which system configuration information is to be collected. Specify the management relay server or its destination group.

    Schedule panel

Specifies the registration date/time, execution date/time, and execution time limit of the job.

  4. Click the Execute, Save, or Save and Execute button.

The job is saved or executed.

(b) Checking the execution results

When a job is executed, information about the system configurations of the systems under the management relay server is reflected in the System Configuration window for the manager.

(c) Notes on job execution

  • When a Get system configuration information job is executed, not only system configuration information but also information about destination groups under management relay servers is reflected in the Destination window for the manager. However, information about ID groups under management relay servers is not reflected in the Destination window for the manager even if operations are performed to link system configuration information and ID groups.

  • The system configuration information collected by a Get system configuration information job is only applied to the system where the job was executed. For example, suppose that a hierarchical system is configured with three tiers, that is, a primary management server, management relay servers, and relay systems. If a Get system configuration information job is executed from the primary management server for relay systems, the system configuration information for the primary management server is updated, but the information for management relay servers is not. If you also want to update system configuration information for management relay servers, execute the Get system configuration information job on a management relay server.

  • Suppose that the Get system configuration information job is executed for relay systems and management relay servers for which system configuration information is not registered. In this case, the system configuration information retained in the system where the job was executed is deleted according to the newly collected system configuration information.

(2) Setting up the facility for automatically registering the system configuration

If the following settings are specified on the manager, the system configuration information managed by management relay servers is automatically reported to the manager and reflected in the system configuration information for the manager.

Settings

Select the Automatically apply system configuration information check box in the System Configuration panel of the Setup for Distribution That Uses Remote Install Manager window. By default, the check box is selected. Clear the check box first, and then select the check box again after using the manager to collect information about the system configurations for the systems under management relay servers.

Important

If the facility for automatically registering the system configuration is set up beforehand, not only system configuration information but also information about destination groups under management relay servers is reflected in the Destination window for the manager. However, information about ID groups under management relay servers is not reflected in the Destination window for the manager. To reflect information about ID groups as well, you must link system configuration information with ID group information. For details about how to do this, see 5.4 Linking system configuration information with ID group information.
