3.2.1 Procedure for collecting software information

To collect software information, execute the Get software information from client job from Remote Installation Manager. This section explains how to collect software information, with a focus on window transitions.

To collect software information:

  1. From the Job Definition window, choose File and then Create Job.
    The Define New Job dialog box opens.

  2. Specify Get software information from client as the job type and click the OK button.

  3. In the Create Job dialog box, specify values on individual pages.
    The types of pages that are displayed in the dialog box and the setting details are explained below.
    Job page
    Specify the job name. For details about how to specify a value on the Job page, see 8.2.3 Setting up the Job page.
    Destination page
    Specify the host from which to collect system information. You must specify at least one destination. For details about how to specify a value on the Destination page, see 8.2.4 Setting up the Destination page.
    Options page
    Specify the software for which software information is to be collected. For details about how to specify a value on the Options page, see 3.2.2 Setting the Options page.
    Schedule page
    Specify job registration date and time, execution date, and execution time limit. For details about how to specify values on the Schedule page, see 8.2.5 Setting up the Schedule page.
    Client Control page
    You can specify whether to use the Client Control facility. For details about how to specify a value on the Client Control page, see 8.2.6 Setting up the Client Control page.
  4. When settings are complete, click the Execute button.
    The software information collection job is executed.
    If you save a job before executing it, you can re-execute it should the job fail. You can also edit an existing job, thereby saving the trouble of creating a new one. Therefore, it is recommended that you save the job by using the Save or Save and Execute button.
    To save a job, you need a saving destination folder on the Job Definition window. For details about how to create a folder, see 8.3.2 Managing saved jobs and folders.
  5. Check the job execution status.
    From the File menu of Remote Installation Manager, choose New and then Job Status to open the Job Status window.

    The following icon appears before the names of the software information collection job:

    Choosing an executed job displays its execution status in the right-hand frame. For details about how to check job execution status, see 8.4 Checking job execution status.
  6. When the job execution is completed, check the collected software information.
    Use Remote Installation Manager to check the collected software information. For details about how to check the software information, see 3.2.6 Checking collected software information.

You can use Inventory Viewer to display and count the number of clients for the collected software information. For details about how to use Inventory Viewer, see 4. Managing Inventory Information.
