Appendix E.1 Upgrading Asset Information Manager

The procedure for upgrading Asset Information Manager is explained here. When upgrading Asset Information Manager, you need to convert the asset management database after installing the program. When upgrading from the trial version, you need to use the same upgrading procedure to convert the asset management database.

To upgrade Asset Information Manager and convert the asset management database:

  1. After checking the notes about upgrading Asset Information Manager, acquire a backup of the asset management database.
To guard against unexpected problems, be sure to collect the backup.
  2. Install Asset Information Manager.
  3. After checking the notes about migration, open the Database Manager dialog box to execute the upgrade of the asset management database.
  4. Change the settings for window operations and managed items as needed.

(2) Backing up the asset management database

Before converting the asset management database, collect its backup.

For details about how to back up the asset management database of Asset Information Manager, see the documentation for Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle depending on which is being used. For details about how to back up the asset management database to CSV files, see 12.1.1 Backing up and restoring the asset management database in CSV format. For details about how to back up the asset management database when converting from Asset Information Manager Embedded RDB Edition, see 12.1.3(1) Backing up the asset management database from the Database Manager dialog box or 12.1.3(2) Backing up the asset management database using commands.

(3) Installing Asset Information Manager by overwriting an older version

You can install Asset Information Manager by overwriting only when one of the following is true:

For details about the installation procedure, see 5.2.2 Installing Asset Information Manager.

Notes on installation
  • When re-installing the same version, if you select Update, those components already installed are not installed again. However, during an upgrade, those components already installed are also re-installed, even if you select Update.
  • When you upgrade the asset management server, Startup type in Asset Information Synchronous Service is set to Manual. Change this setting to Automatic after the database conversion task is finished.

When installation is finished, before converting the database, complete the connection to the asset management server of the newly installed Asset Information Manager and the settings for the asset management server.

For details about how to connect to the database of Asset Information Manager, see 5.5 Creating a data source or net service, and for setting up the asset management server, see 5.3 Setting up the asset management server.

(4) Notes on converting the asset management database

Note the following when converting the asset management database:

(5) Upgrading the asset management database

This subsection gives the procedure for upgrading the asset management database from the Database Manager dialog box when you upgrade Asset Information Manager.

To upgrade the asset management database:

  1. Click the Start button and point to Programs, then Asset Information Manager, and then choose Setup.
    The Setup dialog box appears.
  2. Click the Database Manager icon.
The Database Manager dialog box appears.
  3. Select Upgrade the database and then click the Next button.
The dialog box for upgrading the database is displayed as shown below.

  4. Specify a work folder.
In Work folder name, specify a work folder in which the contents of the asset management database are to be stored temporarily. Clicking the ... button displays a dialog box in which you can browse folders and specify a desired folder. If this specification is omitted, the work folder is created under the Asset Information Manager installation folder.
    Note
When you upgrade the asset management database, the contents of the asset management database are stored in the work folder. Therefore, specify a folder on the drive that has sufficient free space.
  5. Click the Execute button.
The asset management database is upgraded. If the asset management database is Embedded RDB and the database size is less than 100 megabytes before upgrading, it will be changed to 100 megabytes after upgrading.

For details about how to upgrade the asset management database in a cluster environment, see (7) Upgrading the asset management database in a cluster environment.

(6) Tasks following the conversion of the asset management database

After converting the asset management database, execute the tasks listed below. The items with (Required) in their titles must be executed. Those with (Optional) can be executed as needed.

(7) Upgrading the asset management database in a cluster environment

Before you upgrade the asset management database in a cluster environment, use the Cluster Administrator to place the service resources of World Wide Web Publishing Service offline. After that, stop World Wide Web Publishing Service from Services, which is displayed by choosing Administrative Tools from Control Panel. If Asset Information Synchronous Service is running, also stop this service.

For details about how to switch between the active server and the standby server, see the documentation for the cluster software.

To upgrade the asset management database in a cluster environment:

  1. On the asset management server in the executing system, upgrade the asset management database from the Database Manager dialog box.
For details about how to upgrade the asset management database, see (5) Upgrading the asset management database.
  2. If the asset management database is Embedded RDB, place the service resources offline.
For Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle, step 3 is not required.
  3. Switch from the executing system to the standby system.
  4. On the asset management server in the standby system, upgrade the asset management database from the Database Manager dialog box.
For details about how to upgrade the asset management database, see (5) Upgrading the asset management database.
