5.3.3 Registering managed computers in ID groups

There are three ways to register managed computers in ID groups:

Organization of this subsection

(1) Registering managed computers in ID groups directly

You can register a managed computer in an ID group in the Register in ID Group dialog box that is displayed when you select Register in ID Group from the Windows Start menu.

Registration in an ID group takes place with a managed computer connected to an ID-management relay computer. However, you can put registration in an ID group or deregistration from an ID group on hold without a managed computer connected to an ID-management relay computer. In this case, actual registration or deregistration is reported to the ID-management relay computer when you log on or select Register in ID Group after the managed computer is ready to connect to the ID-management relay computer. This allows you to register managed computers in ID groups during the pre-installation and system building stages. Also, while a managed computer is performing processing such as remote installation, it is connected to its higher system by using a different function from an ID-management relay computer. In this case, the system assumes that the managed computer is not connected to an ID-management relay computer.

For details about how to register a managed computer in an ID group from the computer itself, see 12.2.1 Registering a managed computer in an ID group.

(2) Using a file to register managed computers in ID groups from the managing server

On the managing server, you can register managed computers in ID groups based on the contents of a file. This approach is useful in situations where you need to register a large number of computers in ID groups, such as when first building the system. The file, called an ID group file, contains the information required to register multiple computers in ID groups. The following describes how to use a file to register managed computers in ID groups.

(a) Creating an ID group file

An ID group file specifies settings (such as a host name, host ID, ID group name, and the name of an ID-management relay computer) for each host.

If the display language is Japanese, use a text file in the Shift_JIS encoding format to perform I/O operations. If the display language is Chinese (simplified characters), use a text file in the GBK encoding format to perform I/O operations. If the display language is English, use a text file in the ASCII encoding format to perform I/O operations.

You can comment out a line by placing a single-quotation mark or hash mark (#) in the first column.

Format
host-name HID=host-ID,MAC=MAC-address,ID=ID-group-name,MASTER=name-of-ID-management-Relay-Computer
Description
host-name (required)

Specify the host name or IP address of the host to add to the ID group. Host names must be 64 bytes or less.

HID=host-ID

Set a host ID that uniquely identifies the host. You must use the host ID as it appears in the file output when you select Save ID Hosts to File from the File menu. Do not specify this operand if no host ID is set for the host in the file output when you click Save ID Hosts to File, or the host is a new host.

MAC=MAC-address

Set the MAC address of the host. Because MAC address information is used by functions such as Wake on LAN, you should not change the value of this operand as a general rule. If you change the value, some functions might not work.

ID=ID-group-name (required)

Specify the ID group name of the ID group to which you want to add the host. The ID group name cannot be longer than 32 bytes.

MASTER=name-of-ID-management-Relay-Computer

Specify the host ID of the relay system or management relay server that contains the ID group to which you are adding the host. For management relay servers, specify a host name or host ID. You must use the host ID as it appears in the file output when you select Save ID Hosts to File from the File menu.

Host IDs must be 64 bytes or less. If you omit this parameter on a managing server, the managed computer will be registered in the ID group managed by the managing server.

(b) Using a file to register managed computers in ID groups

To register managed computers in ID groups from a file, in the Destination window, select File and then Use File for ID Registration. Then, select the ID group file you created for this purpose.

(c) Outputting ID groups to a file

You can output information about the ID groups defined on the managing server and the hosts registered in those ID groups to a file. To do so, from the File menu in the Destination window, select Save ID Hosts to File. Before you perform this step, click Refresh to refresh the window contents. If the automatic application of system configuration information takes place and the information displayed on screen conflicts with the underlying data, the correct information might not be output to the file.

The following figure shows an example of ID group information output to a file:

(3) Registering managed computers in ID groups as part of automatic ID group maintenance

You can use the automatic ID group maintenance process to automatically register managed computers in ID groups when they meet certain criteria.

For details about how to register managed computers in ID groups by using the automatic ID group maintenance function, see 6.3 Automatic ID group maintenance.
