5.2.5 Modifying host groups

This section describes how to modify a host group.

If you want to add a host group or host to the existing information, see 5.2.5(1) Adding hosts and host groups from a file. If you want to initialize the existing information and register host and host groups again, see 5.2.5(2) Modifying hosts and host groups from a file.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Adding hosts and host groups from a file

You can use the Remote Install Manager component of JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Manager to add host groups and hosts from a file.

To add host groups or hosts from a file:

  1. Create a host group file that defines only the host groups and hosts that you want to add.

For details about how to create a host group file, see 5.2.3(1) Creating a host group file.

  2. In the Destination window, from the File menu, select Add from File.

The Add Destination dialog box appears.

  3. Select the host group file you created in step 1, and then click Open.

The system begins the process of registering the host groups and hosts.

(2) Modifying hosts and host groups from a file

This process involves outputting the host group configuration to a file, updating the file contents, and then creating host groups based on the updated file.

For details about how to save the host group configuration to a file, and how to create host groups from a saved file, see 5.2.3 Creating host groups from a file.

(3) Modifying hosts and host groups from the Destination window

The following describes how to modify host groups from the Destination window. For details about how to search for the host groups or hosts you want to modify, see 6.1.1 Searching for hosts by name.

(a) Renaming a host group

The following describes how to rename a host group. You cannot change the destination name of a host in the Destination window.

  1. In the Destination window, select the host group you want to rename.

The host group you selected is highlighted in the window.

  2. From the File menu, select Rename.

  3. Enter the new name, and press Enter.

The name will be changed to the specified name.

(b) Editing (deleting, copying, or moving) a host group or host

To edit (delete, copy, or move) a host group or host, make the Destination window the active window, and select the host group or host that you want to edit. Then, select Delete, Copy, Cut, or Paste from the Edit menu.

You can also edit host groups and hosts by dragging them in the user interface.

Notes:
  • Do not double-click the Network node in the left pane after clicking Copy or Cut.

If you double-click this node, the Paste command becomes unavailable in the Edit menu, and you will be unable to paste the host group or host. In this case, click Copy or Cut again.

  • When displaying multiple instances of the Destination window, you cannot copy a host group or host in one window and paste it into another.

(c) Notes on editing destinations

If a communication error or other problem occurs while you are editing (deleting, copying, or moving) a host group or host in the Destination window, you might be unable to restore it to its previous state. For this reason, we recommend that you save the host group configuration to a file before editing a large number of host groups or hosts.

For details about how to save the host group configuration to a file, and how to create host groups from a saved file, see 5.2.3 Creating host groups from a file.
