6.2.2 Chat window operating environment setup

When setting up a chat window operating environment, use the Options dialog box. Note that the Options dialog box includes certain items that cannot be set while the Chat window is connected to the chat server. Therefore, set up an appropriate operating environment at a time when the Chat window is not connected to the chat server.

To display the Options dialog box:

  1. In the Chat window, choose Settings and then Options.
    The Options dialog box opens.

The settings in each page of the Options dialog box are as follows. To save the settings without closing the dialog box, click the Apply button. To save the settings and close the dialog box, click the OK button.

(1) General page

In the General page, specify user information. While chatting, you can view this information of the user you are chatting with. This page is inactive when the Chat window is connected to the chat server.

Nickname (required)
Specify a nickname to be used during the chat session, using 260 or less characters. The default nickname is the current logon name.
Do not include a space or the following characters in the nickname.
Characters that cannot be used in nicknames are:
Question mark (?), double quotation mark ("), slash (/), back slash (\), less-than sign (<), greater-than sign (>), asterisk (*), vertical bar (|), colon (:), and semicolon (;).
Nicknames must be unique. If a user attempts to connect to the chat server when another user with the same nickname is already connected, the user receives a message stating that another user with the same nickname exists and the connection request is rejected.

Name
Specify your name, using 260 or fewer characters. The default name is the name that was specified during user registration when the system was installed.

Unit
Specify the unit (organization) you belong to. The default unit is the company name that was specified during user registration when the system was installed.

Email address
Specify your email address, using 260 or less characters.

Comment
Write a comment of 260 or less characters.

(2) Connection page

In the Connection page, specify a port number that will be used for connection.

Port number
Specify the port number to be used by the chat function as an integer from 0 to 65535. Be careful not to use a port number that is being used by another program. The default port number is 30005.

(3) Notification page

In the Notification page, specify an operation that is to be performed when a chat message is received.

Action
Make the displayed title bar blink
Select this check box to make the title bar display blink when a chat message arrives. By default, this check box is cleared. When the Chat window is brought to the front, the title bar stops blinking.
This setting is ineffective when the Chat window is already in front of any other window or is iconized.
Display in front of all windows
Select this check box to bring the Chat window to the front of the screen when a chat message arrives. By default, this check box is cleared.
This setting is ineffective when the Chat window is already in front of any other window or is iconized.
Beep
Select this check box if you want your computer to beep when a chat message arrives. When you select this check box, you can specify the number of beeps as an integer from 1 to 99. The specified number of beeps will be emitted at 0.5-second intervals. By default, one beep will be emitted.

Suppress display of the messages
Connection to server
Select this check box if you want to suppress messages that report establishment of connection to a server. This check box is cleared by default.
Disconnection from server
Select this check box if you want to suppress messages that report disconnection from a server. This check box is cleared by default.
Joining of a new user
Select this check box if you want to suppress messages that report when a new user joins the chat session. This check box is cleared by default. If this check box is selected, no message will appear even when another user joins the chat session. Nor will the action specified on the Action area in the Notification page be performed even when a chat message is received from another user.
Exit of a user
Select this check box if you want to suppress messages that report exit of other users. This check box is cleared by default. If this check box is selected, no message will appear even when another user exits from the chat session. Nor will the action specified on the Action area in the Notification page be performed even when a chat message is received from another user.
Messages from unselected users
Select this check box if you want to suppress chat messages from users who are not selected in the User list box. This check box is cleared by default. If this check box is selected, chat messages received from users who are not selected in the User list box will not be displayed. Nor will the action specified on the Action area in the Notification page be performed even when a chat message is received from a user who is not selected in the User list box.

(4) View page

In the View page, specify a message display format.

View
Specify information to be added to the message. You can change this setting event when you are connected to the chat server. If you change this setting, the change will not be applied to messages that were issued in the past, but will be applied to any future messages that will be received.
Messages are displayed in the following format.
date time name@host-name > message
Date
Select this check box to display the message reception date. By default, this check box is selected.
Time
Select this check box to display the message reception time. By default, this check box is selected.
Nickname
Select this check box to display the message sender name. By default, this check box is selected.
Host name
Select this check box to display the host name of the message sender. By default, this check box is cleared.

Message format
Specify a message format.
Display message on one line.
Select this option to display the message on one line. If the message is longer than the chat view area, you can see the message using the scroll bar. By default, this option is not selected.
Wrap text in displayed messages.
Select this option to wrap around the message lines so that the entire message can be fit within the chat view area. By default, this option is selected.

Fonts
Specify message display fonts.
Received message
Specify a font for received messages. For this specification, use the Fonts dialog box, which is displayed when you click the Received message button. The default font is as follows:
  • Font: MS Sans Serif
  • Points: 9
  • Color: Blue
The currently selected font is displayed to the right of Received message. However, the Color setting is not displayed.
Send message
Specify a font for messages to be transmitted. For this specification, use the Fonts dialog box that is displayed when you click the Send message button. The default font is as follows:
  • Font: MS Sans Serif
  • Points: 9
  • Color: Black
The currently selected font is displayed to the right of Send message. However, the Color setting is not displayed.

(5) Window page

In the Window page, specify a display format for the Chat window.

User list box area
% of size of the entire window
Specify the size of the User list box to the size of the entire Chat window as a percentage from 10 to 90%. The default percentage is 25%. The new size is saved, and applied the next time the Chat window opens.
You can also change the User list box size by using the mouse.

Message input box
Use the auto-complete function
Select this check box to use the auto-complete function when entering messages. By default, this check box is cleared.
