4.2.3 Transferring clipboard data

When you edit a document on an agent by using the remote control facility and want to copy or move data between a document on the agent and a document on the controller, you will need to transfer clipboard data between the agent and the controller. You can transfer text, bitmaps, metafiles, rich text format files, color palettes, and any combination of the above. The following figure provides an overview of transferring data between clipboards.

Figure 4-17 Clipboard data transmission

[Figure]

When the connected agent is version 05-21 or later, you can use the automatic clipboard data transmission facility, and eliminate the inconvenience of having to perform each transfer manually. Note that the automatic transmission facility transfers clipboard data every time the clipboard contents are updated, regardless of whether or not it is necessary. As a result, you may not be able to correctly grasp the clipboard contents of the local machine, or the operation speed may slow down depending of the size of transferred clipboard data. Accordingly, you should use the automatic transmission facility only when manual transmission is cumbersome, e.g., when you need to cut and paste data between the controller and agent frequently.

The following subsections describe how to transfer clipboard data manually, and how to configure the system to perform automatic transmission.

Organization of this subsection
(1) Manual transmission
(2) Automatic transmission

(1) Manual transmission

You can use either of two methods to transfer data from the clipboard manually:

These methods are explained below.

(a) Open the Transfer Clipboard Data dialog box and transfer data

You can use the Transfer Clipboard Data dialog box to select a transfer type and a data type.

To perform the operation:

  1. On the controller or agent, select the data you want to transfer, and copy (or cut) it.
The data is stored in the clipboard of the controller or agent.
  2. From the Tools menu, choose Transfer Clipboard Data. (Alternatively, click the Send Data button on the toolbar.)
The Transfer Clipboard Data dialog box appears.

    [Figure]

    Transfer type
Specify the data transmission direction. Select Receive to use the agent's data on the controller, and select Send to use the controller's data on the agent.
    Data type
Specify the format of the data to be transmitted. Select Plain text if the transmission data is text only. For data other than text (such as bitmaps, metafiles, rich text, or color palettes), or a combination of text and other types of data, select Formatted data.
  3. Make any necessary selections, and choose OK.
The data transmission starts. A message dialog box appears during the transmission indicating the transmission status.
  4. Paste the data on the screen (into the application) of the controller or agent, to which the data is to be transferred.
    The transferred data is pasted.
(b) Use the pull-down menu attached to the Send Data button to transfer data

You can open a pull-down menu by clicking the arrow next to the Send Data button on the toolbar in the Remote Control window. Select the desired menu item.

Send
Sends data in all format combinations, including text, bitmaps, metafiles, rich text, and color palettes to the agent. Choosing this menu item performs the same function as selecting Send for Transfer type and Formatted data for Data type in the Transfer Clipboard Data dialog box.

Receive
Receives data in all format combinations, including text, bitmaps, metafiles, rich text, and color palettes from the agent. Choosing this menu item performs the same function as selecting Receive for Transfer type and Formatted data for Data type in the Transfer Clipboard Data dialog box.

Send - Text Only
Sends text-format data to the agent. Choosing this menu item performs the same function as selecting Send for Transfer type and Plain text for Data type in the Transfer Clipboard Data dialog box.

Receive - Text Only
Receives text-format data from the agent. Choosing this menu item performs the same function as selecting Receive for Transfer type and Plain text for Data type in the Transfer Clipboard Data dialog box.

If the toolbar is not displayed, you can view it using either of the following two methods:

(2) Automatic transmission

When the connected agent is version 05-23 or later, you can use the automatic clipboard data transmission facility. This facility automatically transfers clipboard data to the connected controller or agent when the contents of the clipboard are updated. Using this facility keeps the contents of the controller and agent clipboards identical at all times, thus allowing you to perform seamless editing operations over different machines.

To use the facility, in the Properties dialog box, in the Clipboard page, set the Transfer the clipboard data automatically option. You can restrict the direction of transmission (send or receive) and data format (plain text or formatted data). When using the facility to receive the agent's clipboard data, you can select the transmission condition from the following: Always receive the data and Receive the data only when the Remote Control window is active. If you select the Always receive the data option when connected to more than one agent, the controller will receive clipboard data from all agents. If this is inconvenient, select the Receive the data only when the Remote Control window is active option. With this selected, even if connected to multiple agents, you only receive data from the agent currently subject to remote control. For details on how to configure the automatic transfer of clipboard data, see 3.3.8 Clipboard page.

While transferring data, the system displays a message and progress bar (bar indicating the transmission progress by percentage) in the status bar situated at the bottom of the Remote Control window.

If you start receiving an unexpectedly large file, which looks like it will take an excessively long time to transfer, you can right-click the progress bar and choose Cancel to cancel the transmission. The system will discard the data being transmitted, and the clipboard contents will revert to the previous state.
