11.1.2 Client startup and job execution

For a client to receive a specified job from the managing server and automatically execute the installation process for it, you must start the client. Conversely, if you do not want the client PC to receive jobs from the managing server because the current operation should not be interrupted, you must shut down the client. Alternatively, in the case of a JP1/Software Distribution Client (client) in which the client needs to be stopped frequently, you can specify the client as non-resident in the setup process.

This section explains how to start and stop a client, as well as how to execute a job without starting the client. It also provides notes on job execution.

You should always keep the client in started status under JP1/Software Distribution Manager (relay manager) or JP1/Software Distribution Client (relay system). When the client status is Terminated, the PC cannot receive jobs and cannot function as a relay system. In JP1/Software Distribution Manager (relay manager), the client facilities are started and shut down with Windows, and cannot be started and shut down manually. In contrast, the client facilities in JP1/Software Distribution Client (relay system) can be started and shut down manually using Client Manager.

(2) Making a client non-resident
(3) Executing a job when the client has not been started (terminated by default)
(4) Notes on job execution after the client returns from sleep mode

(1) Starting a client or shutting down a client

A client starts automatically when Windows is started and shuts down automatically when Windows is shut down. However, by using Client Manager, you can start and shut down a client manually. You can use Client Manager in JP1/Software Distribution Client.

Client Manager is a facility that enables you to check the client's current status. Choosing the Client Manager icon from the Start menu displays the Client Manager dialog box, which shows the current client status as Running, Terminated, Starting or terminating, or Terminated by default (Windows NT).

You can also start or shut down a client by choosing the Start or Stop button in the Client Manager dialog box. However, you cannot start a client with the Start button while it is in Terminated by default status. For details about how to start a client in Terminated by default status, see (2) Making a client non-resident below. Even when you use Client Manager to stop a client, you cannot stop the monitoring of its operation status.

(2) Making a client non-resident

In the case of a client PC that is constantly used in other operations or in which software is installed infrequently, it may not make sense to keep the client resident all the time. You can use the setup process to specify the client as non-resident. You make a client non-resident with specification on the Default Running Status/Polling page.

In the Client Manager dialog box, a non-resident client is displayed as Terminated, and can be started manually as necessary. In Windows NT, a client can be shown as Terminated by default in the Client Manager dialog box only when the three settings listed below are specified in the setup:

To start the client in such a case, select Client starts automatically at system boot in the setup, and perform either of the following:

You can make a client non-resident only in JP1/Software Distribution Client (client), not in JP1/Software Distribution Manager (relay manager) or JP1/Software Distribution Client (relay system).

(3) Executing a job when the client has not been started (terminated by default)

Before being started or while non-resident, a client cannot receive jobs from the managing server. To receive and execute jobs, such a client needs to poll the managing server, which involves connecting to the higher system and determining out whether any jobs for the client's own system are pending. If your client is non-resident, you can enable it to perform polling only when the client system starts. You specify the poll-at-system-startup option on the Default Running Status/Polling page, as in the case of making a client non-resident. If the client PC is running Windows 8, Windows Vista or Windows 7 as its OS, this setting is not needed because the client is resident.

To perform polling at times other than system startup, you can choose the Execute Job Backlog icon. For details about how to use the Execute Job Backlog page, see 2.13.1(2)(b) Executing a job at an arbitrary time in the manual Description and Planning Guide.

Some client facilities, such as Register in ID Group, Package Setup Manager, and Local System Viewer, can be executed even while the client has not been started. You can execute these functions by using the icon for Software Distribution Client or Software Distribution Manager folder. For details about icons, see 11.1.3 Client menu.

(4) Notes on job execution after the client returns from sleep mode

The following notes apply to job execution after a client returns from sleep mode (the mode that is entered when the user does not operate the client for a specified period).
