4.2.3 Examples of count condition settings and count results

This section explains how to specify count conditions in the Condition Settings dialog box of the Count Clients wizard. The condition values you can set depend on the inventory item. This section first describes the common settings in the Condition Settings dialog box, and then describes the settings specific to various inventory items. It also shows examples of count results.

Figure 4-11 Condition Settings dialog box

[Figure]

To set count conditions, in the Inventory tree view, select the inventory items for which you want to count hosts. Then, in the Condition value pane, specify a count condition and click Add Condition. The specified count condition is added to the Conditions list below.

To set count conditions based on combining several inventory items, use the Count/view conditions pane to select whether to handle the conditions as combined conditions or separate conditions. For example, if you wish to count hosts by selecting CPU type and OS, you would select Combined conditions in order to count the number of hosts that satisfy both the CPU type and the OS. With this counting, for example, you could check the number of hosts whose CPU type is Intel Pentium III and OS is Windows 2000 Professional. If you select Separate conditions, Inventory Viewer would display separate count results for CPU type and for OS.

Figure 4-12 Example of count results for Combined conditions and Separate conditions

[Figure]

When you select Combined conditions, AND is displayed at the beginning of the Condition column in the Conditions list. The count conditions displayed in the Conditions list are combined sequentially starting at the top.

You should note the following about combining multiple inventory items in setting count conditions:

(2) Counting hosts by software inventory

This section explains how to count hosts on the basis of names in the managed software inventory.

Because license information can be set in the software inventory, you can perform license management by counting the hosts that have selected items in their software inventory. Inventory Viewer tallies the number of hosts in which the software is installed, and for each software item sets off in different colors the Number of owned licenses and the Number of licenses for warning.

For details about how to manage acquired software information and how to set license information, see 3.2.5 Filtering a software inventory.

(5) Counting hosts by host type

This section explains how to count the numbers of managers, relay systems, and clients.

When a relay manager/system and client reside on the same computer, that host is counted only as a relay manager/system. However, when the central manager and a client co-exist on the computer that is performing the count, that computer is counted only as a client.

When you select an offline folder and offline machines as count targets in the Host-selection window, the offline folder is counted as a relay system and the offline machines are counted as clients. For details about offline folders and offline machines, see 7.7.2(3) Collecting information from an offline machine.

Condition value settings

In the Inventory tree view, select Host type.

When you select this check box and add a condition, NOT is displayed after the selected user inventory item in the Condition column in the Conditions list.
Note

If a selection item is duplicated within a hierarchy of user inventory items, it appears as a single summarized entry in the Select user inventory list. The count for that selection item is the sum of the individual counts. For example, if a user inventory item has been created as in the figure below and the client computers are counted by section, the count for the Management section is the total number of computers in the Management sections of the Development department and the General Affairs department. If you require separate counts, you must use a combined condition of the higher item (Department) and the lower item (Section). To generate meaningful results, make sure that you fully understand the structure of user inventory items. For details about hierarchical user inventory items, see 3.3.2(5) Procedure for creating hierarchical user inventory items.
