3.2.5 Filtering a software inventory

When software information is collected using the Search for a file option of the Get software information from client job, a software inventory dictionary is created based on the collected information. In this software inventory dictionary, you specify whether each software program is to be managed and, if so, the name under which it is to be managed.

How to edit a software inventory dictionary is explained below.

Organization of this subsection
(1) Setting the software inventory information to be displayed
(2) Displaying only specified software
(3) Setting license counts
(4) Deleting software

(1) Setting the software inventory information to be displayed

You can edit the software inventory dictionary from the Filter Software Inventory dialog box. Specify whether or not each software program is to be managed and under what name it is to be managed.

To facilitate editing, you can resize the Filter Software Inventory dialog box as necessary.

To edit the software inventory dictionary:

  1. In the System Configuration, Destination, Package, Job Definition, Job Status or Directory Information window, from the Options menu, choose Filter Software Inventory.
The Filter Software Inventory dialog box appears.

Figure 3-21 Filter Software Inventory dialog box

    [Figure]

    Define software to filter
Software information collected using Search for a file is displayed in this pane. You use this pane to select the software you want to manage. In the Define software to filter list, you can display specified software only or the software deleted from the software inventory dictionary. For details, see (2) Displaying only specified software and (4)(b) Checking the software that was deleted from the software inventory dictionary below.
The following explains the meanings of the check box symbols to the left of the software name:
    Check box Description
[Figure] Indicates software information newly collected using Search for a file.
[Figure] Indicates managed software. To stop managing the item, click the check box.
[Figure] Indicates unmanaged software. To manage the software, click the check box.
[Figure] Indicates that the decision about managing the software is on hold. To manage the software, click the check box.
Modified displays the update date/time that was acquired in the client's local time. Modified (UTC) displays the update date/time that was acquired in UTC time and converted to the managing server's local time.
    Manage
Selecting a software name in the Define software to filter list and clicking this button makes the software a management target. You can select multiple software programs and make them all management targets at once.
    Do Not Manage
Selecting a software name in the Define software to filter list and clicking this button removes the software as a management target. You can select multiple software programs and remove them all as management targets at once.
    Hold
Selecting a software name in the Define software to filter list and clicking this button places the decision on whether or not to manage the software on hold. Use this button when you are not sure about managing a software item. You can select multiple software programs and place them all on hold at once.
Do Not Manage All New Software
This button removes all new software (software indicated by [Figure]) as the management targets. Check that the check box display has changed, and then choose either Apply or OK.
    Details page
You use this page to display or modify the product information for a software item selected in the Define software to filter list. The following five items cannot be changed:
File name, Path name, Modified, Modified (UTC), and File size
  2. Specify whether or not each software program is to be managed; if so, specify the software name to be used for management, and then choose either Apply or OK.
    The settings are saved.

(2) Displaying only specified software

You can specify the software programs in the software inventory dictionary that are be displayed in the Filter Software Inventory dialog box. This can make it easier to find the software you wish to edit.

You cannot only specify display conditions using the Manage and Do Not Manage management status options, but you can also specify detailed display conditions.

To display specified software:

  1. In the Filter Software Inventory dialog box, choose the Filtering tab.

    Figure 3-22 Filtering page

    [Figure]

  2. Specify on the right side of the Filtering page display conditions based on each item's management status.
First select List software in software inventory, and then select one of the following items:
    List all detected software
Select this option to display all software programs contained in the software inventory dictionary.
    List currently registered software
    All
Displays all existing software programs contained in the software inventory dictionary, excluding newly acquired software.
    Managed software
Displays the software programs that are to be managed.
    Unmanaged software
Displays the software programs that are not to be managed.
    Hold software
Displays the software for which the management decision is on hold.
    List newly detected software
Select this option to display newly acquired software.
For List software deleted from software inventory, see (4)(b) Checking the software that was deleted from the software inventory dictionary below.
  3. If you wish to specify more detailed conditions, specify them in Filtering condition settings.
Specify a display condition in the Key item and Condition fields, and then click the Add button. The condition is set and displayed in the list box below. For multiple conditions, specify another condition in Key item and Condition, select AND or OR, and then click the Add button. You can create up to five conditions. If AND and OR are both used, the evaluation begins at the top of the list and proceeds sequentially.
    Condition
The way you specify a condition depends on the key item for which the condition is being set.
    Language
Select a language from the list box. Software matching the specified language is displayed.
    File size
Select a comparison symbol from the list box and specify a size in bytes. Software that is greater than, less than, or equal to the specified file size will be displayed.
    Modified or Modified (UTC)
Specify a date in MM/DD/YYYY format, and select Before or After. The range of dates that can be specified is from January 1, 1970, to December 31, 2037. Software whose modification date is before or after the specified date will be displayed.
    Others
Enter a character string and select whether to display software containing or not containing the specified value. The entry is not case-sensitive.
To display software that has no value for the specified key item, select Has no value. However, if you selected File name in Key item, you cannot select Has no value (because there is always a file name value).
If you select Software version or File version in Key item, you can also specify Greater than or Less than in the condition for the specified characters. For example, you can specify 06-00 and Greater than as the condition.
    AND, OR
When you create a second or subsequent condition, select AND if you want to display software that satisfies this and the previous condition(s). Select OR if you want to display software that satisfies either condition.
    Change
When you select a condition that is shown in the list box, it is displayed in the Key item and Condition fields. You change the condition, and then choose Change to reflect the change in the list box.
    Delete
When you select a condition in the list box and choose Delete, the specified condition is deleted. You can delete multiple conditions at the same time.
  4. Choose Apply.
Only the software that satisfies the display conditions specified in both Step 2 and Step 3 is displayed in the Define software to filter list.
Whenever the Filter Software Inventory dialog box is started, software is displayed on the basis of the conditions that were in effect when the dialog box was closed the previous time.

(3) Setting license counts

By registering license count thresholds for each software program, you can use the Count Result page of Inventory Viewer to check software that has exceeded or is nearing a license count threshold.

To check software:

  1. In the Filter Software Inventory dialog box, choose License.

    Figure 3-23 License page

    [Figure]

  2. In the Define software to filter list, select a software name, and enter on the License page values for Number of owned licenses and Number of licenses for warning.
Software that has exceeded the number of owned licenses is displayed in red in the Count Result page of Inventory Viewer. Software that has exceeded the number of licenses for warning but has not exceeded the number of owned licenses is displayed in yellow.
If you choose not to manage licenses, specify 0 in both Number of owned licenses and Number of licenses for warning.
If no software name is specified, you cannot specify license count values. You can specify Number of owned licenses and Number of licenses for warning for each set of a software name and a software version.
  3. Choose Set Up.
    A confirmation message is displayed.
  4. Choose OK.
    The license counts are set.
To return to the values that were in effect before the Set Up button was clicked, choose Undo.

(4) Deleting software

You can delete specified software from the software inventory dictionary. Software deleted from the software inventory dictionary is also deleted from each host's software inventory information.

Software deleted from the software inventory dictionary is registered into a deleted software management table. As a result, the next time a Get software information from client job with Search for a file specified is executed, any software information reported from a host as being registered in the deleted software management table is not added to the software inventory dictionary, nor is it added to the host's software inventory information.

To restore to the software inventory dictionary software that has been deleted from the dictionary, you simply delete the software from the deleted software management table.

By deleting unneeded software from the software inventory dictionary, you reduce the time required for displaying the software inventory dictionary and you reduce the database size. Also, because unneeded software does not add to the number of items displayed in the Filter Software Inventory dialog box, editing becomes easier.

The following figure shows how to delete software from the software inventory dictionary.
