You should note the following points when collecting software information.
- To use the Search all software option to collect applied or unapplied patch information, the client must satisfy certain conditions. For details about the necessary conditions, see 7.2 Detecting client patch information.
- In an environment in which Search software listed in "Add/Remove Programs" is used to acquire information about Hitachi program products from a client for which Include Hitachi program products in the "Add/Remove Programs" is set, do not use Search all software to acquire software information. If Search all software is used, the installed package information for Hitachi program products will be acquired as two types, Hitachi program products and Software in "Add/Remove Programs"; as a result, duplicated information will be displayed.
If information about Hitachi program products is duplicated in Remote Installation Manager, Inventory Viewer, and the CSV output utility, you should set the display conditions to limit the information to be displayed.
If JP1/Asset Information Manager is linked and the installed package information is duplicated, information may not be managed correctly in JP1/Asset Information Manager.
- If Search software listed in "Add/Remove Programs" is used to acquire software information, some of the information about Hitachi program products that were installed manually may not be acquired.
- To obtain software information using Search for Microsoft Office products or Search for anti-virus products, Windows Script Host must be installed on the client if the client's operating system is Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 98. If it is not installed, you will have to download Windows Script 5.6 from the Microsoft web site.
- When the Search the files specified in the software inventory option is selected, you can find files only if the file names for the software specified as managed in the software inventory dictionary do not exceed a total of 32,766 bytes.
- Using the asterisk wildcard (*) in order to search many clients may place a heavy burden on the network and may cause the size of the relational database to expand unreasonably. If you use the wildcard character, you should restrict the search to a minimum number of clients.
- When you specify an execution date on the Schedule page and you select multiple search items on the Options page, multiple jobs will be executed on the client at the same time. In such a case, the client's workload during job execution is likely to be high.
- If you obtain software information and then you re-execute the Get software information from client job with different settings on the Options page, the previous information and the new information will be merged.
- If a job execution interval is specified, all the software information is acquired the first time and only the changes are acquired thereafter. However, if Search for Microsoft Office products or Search for anti-virus products is selected, all the software information is reported each and every time.
- If a version of Client earlier than 08-10-06 is used and software information is acquired from a client in a different time zone, the software information will be duplicated due to the difference in date and time. If this happens, change the version of JP1/Software Distribution system to 08-10-06 or later. This will enable you to acquire software information as the same information even from a client in a different time zone. After you have upgraded the JP1/Software Distribution system, re-create the software inventory dictionary.
- For a version of Client earlier than 08-10-06, if the client's time zone is changed, the date and time will be treated as having been changed and software information that has already been acquired will be acquired again as different information. In such a case, after the client's time zone has been changed, select the Update the software inventory information check box in the file search options, and acquire the software information again. If the same file is registered more than once in the software inventory dictionary due to a difference in time zone, you can manage the files as the same software by setting the product name and version in the files to the same values. For Client 08-10-06 or later, the software information can be managed as being the same even when the time zone has been changed.
- If the lower system is UNIX, the following types of software information will be obtained:
Specification in Software to be searched |
Information obtained from a UNIX system |
Search software installed by Software Distribution |
Collects information on Hitachi program products and UAPs. |
Search all software# |
Collects information on Hitachi program products, other companies' software, and the software in the software search list. |
Search for software in "Add/Remove Programs" |
Collects information on Hitachi program products and other companies' software. |
Search for a file# |
Collects the same information as when Search software installed by Software Distribution is specified. |
Search for Microsoft Office products |
Job results in an error and no information is collected. |
- #
- Only All fixed drives and All fixed drives + network drives may be specified as the drives to be searched. If Specified drives is specified, all fixed drives are searched.
- Software information might not be collectible if the software contains characters that cannot be converted to the current code page.
- To use Search for Microsoft Office products to collect software information, you must first install Microsoft Office Disk 1 on the client. Information about Microsoft Office cannot be collected when Microsoft Office Disk 1 has not been installed.
- To use Search for Microsoft Office products or Search for anti-virus products to collect software information, you must first enable startup of the cscript.exe Windows Script Host execution module on the client.
If cscript.exe startup is not enabled, the following occurs, in which case information about Microsoft Office products or anti-virus products cannot be collected:
- In the case of using a Get software information from client job to collect information, the job will result in an error (detail code: 3000ef250000).
- In the case of an attempt to collect information from an offline machine, there may be a considerable delay in executing the dminv command. Additionally, information about Microsoft Office products or anti-virus products will not be displayed even when the collected inventory information is applied to JP1/Software Distribution Manager.
- If the system contains multiple clients at different locales using versions earlier than 08-51, and an attempt is made to collect file information for the same software from all the clients, the obtained information might be registered as different software in the software inventory dictionary.
In such a case, upgrade the clients so that the versions of the central manager and clients in the system are all 08-51 or later, perform inventory information collection again, and then re-configure the software inventory dictionary.
- Software information cannot be collected for Modern UI applications. For the limitations on Modern UI applications, see 2.13.7 Notes on using a client in the manual Description and Planning Guide.
The following describes the note when you upgrade JP1/Software Distribution Manager:
- When you upgrade JP1/Software Distribution Manager, new search information may be added to the search information files for Microsoft Office products and anti-virus products. For the added new search information, see 2.2.2 (1) (e) Search for Microsoft Office products or (f) Search for anti-virus products in the manual Description and Planning Guide.
When you want to acquire the installed software information from clients, execute a Get software information from client job with the following options to obtain the latest software information from the clients.
- Search for Microsoft Office products
- Search for anti-virus products
If you have already created and executed a job with the above option, re-execute it to obtain the latest software information. (If you are using the Automatic reporting of updated inventory information facility, you need to execute the Get software information from client job to obtain the latest software information from the clients.)
Also, when you re-execute a job with the above option that failed before upgrading JP1/Software Distribution Manager, the updated search information file will not take effect because the job that was created before upgrading the JP1/Software Distribution Manager is used.
The following describes the note when you upgrade JP1/Software Distribution Client:
- The search methods Search for Microsoft Office products and Search for anti-virus products are performed based on the search information files for Microsoft Office products and anti-virus products. Upgrading JP1/Software Distribution Client will not update the search information files.
