The UNIX version of the JP1/AJS3 mail system linkage function supports email in the RFC822 format only. JP1/AJS3 can, however, handle the following email if you install an appropriate mail filter application:
- Email using Kanji or other multibyte characters
- Email containing MIME or other encoded text
A mail filter application converts the above email to a character code system supported by the recipient host (language environment in which JP1/AJS3 is running).
The following figure gives an overview of how a mail filter application converts email.

Email converted by the mail filter application is only used for mail reception by the mail system linkage function. When storing the received mail, the system stores the version before it is converted by the mail filter application.
Prepare a mail filter application when setting up mail system linkage.
