12.2.2 Notes on using the agent functions for the distribution by using Remote Install Manager

This subsection describes the notes on operating the agent for the distribution by using Remote Install Manager.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Installation modes and user permissions

There are two modes for remote installation: background installation mode (install by simply copying files), and GUI installation mode (operate by windows and dialog boxes). Most distributed software products, such as Hitachi program products and other companies' software, use the GUI installation mode.

Do not enable non-Administrator users to change their access permissions for the registry below. If non-Administrator users are enabled to change their access permissions for the registries, remote installation might be disabled.

Note, however, that, in background installation mode, packages are installed in a computer, regardless of the permissions given to the user logged on to the computer.

In addition, when you perform installation with GUI installation mode to the Citrix XenApp and Microsoft RDS server, any user must log on to the Citrix XenApp and Microsoft RDS server.

(2) Restrictions on installation with non-Administrator user permissions

The following describes the installation restrictions on the agent:

(a) Moving of startup programs

Moving of startup programs is subject to the following restrictions:

  • Changes of the ITDM2_Startup folder

If you select (in agent configuration dialog box) Create the startup folder (ITDM2_Startup) for only IT Desktop Management 2. for Startup settings, where the ITDM2_Startup folder is created varies depending on whether installation is performed with non-Administrator permissions.

When installation is performed with non-Administrator permissions, the ITDM2_Startup folder is created in a shared program folder.

If Move startup programs into the ITDM2_Startup folder. is selected and shortcuts are registered for the startup programs in both shared and personal program folders, the ITDM2_Startup folder is created in both shared and personal program folders.

If non-Administrator and Administrator users are to share the ITDM2_Startup folder, a shortcut for the ITDM2_Startup folder must be created so that the folder can be accessed with either non-Administrator or Administrator permissions.

  • Applicable scope of the setting to automatically move startup programs

If you select (in the agent configuration dialog box) Move startup programs into the ITDM2_Startup folder. for Startup settings, automatic moving applies to all users' startup programs.

Also, non-Administrator users' startup programs are all moved into the ITDM2_Startup folder, regardless of their settings in the Startup program (shortcut file) to be moved list. If you want to return a non-Administrator user's startup program to a personal startup group, do the following:

In the agent configuration dialog box, choose Startup settings, clear the Move startup programs into the ITDM2_Startup folder. check box, and then manually move the startup program.

  • Applicable scope of uninstallation when startup programs are automatically moved

If you select (in the agent configuration dialog box) Move startup programs into the ITDM2_Startup folder. for Startup settings, the following operations are performed automatically only for logged-on users:

    • Moving startup programs into a startup group

    • Deleting the ITDM2_Startup folder

Users who are not logged on must perform the above operations manually.
