JP1 Version 12 JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 Distribution Function Administration Guide

3.3.1 Settings for using Wake on LAN

This subsection describes the settings you need to specify in the agent configurations.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Items requiring careful consideration

Max. number of subsystems in which jobs can execute concurrently

You cannot start destination systems if 0 is specified for the following options in the setup of the manager that starts the computer, or in the agent configurations of the relay system:

  • On the management server, the value of Number of JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Agent instances that can execute jobs concurrently on the Server Customization Options page of the Setup for Distribution by Using Remote Install Manager window.

  • On the relay system, the value of Number of JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Agent instances that can execute jobs concurrently in the Processing settings for the relay system area of the Relay system settings page.

(2) Items with recommended values

Polling settings

We recommend that you enable the Client will poll the managing server option in the polling settings.

(3) Notes

The cautionary notes below apply when using Wake on LAN to perform Client Control.

(a) Notes on the system configuration

When using the Client Control facility in a system configuration in which a router is located on job routes, you must use one of the network configurations below. From a security perspective, the first environment is preferred.

  1. Deploy one or more management relay servers or relay systems for each router, and ensure that they are always running (recommended).

  2. Configure the router to pass broadcast packets.

In this case, you do not need to deploy management relay servers or relay systems for each router.

If you configure the router to pass broadcast packets, the system might be vulnerable to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. To avoid this possibility, use the first environment above.

(b) Notes on hardware

Note the following in relation to hardware when using the Client Control facility:

  • In the BIOS settings, enable any items relating to Wake on LAN.

  • If a hub or NIC supports the LinkChange function, turning on that device will cause computers with Wake on LAN enabled to start. To avoid this issue, either leave the device on, or disable the LinkChange function.

  • A LAN card outputs three types of signals: RWU-High, RWU-Low, and PME. Because the type of signal the card uses depends on the motherboard, you need to set the jumper pins appropriately. For details about the pin settings, see the documentation for your LAN card.

(c) Notes on startup

Note the following when using the Client Control facility to start computers:

  • If you execute multiple jobs using the Client Control facility, and each job is configured to start the destination computer, only the first startup request to a given destination takes effect. Subsequent requests to the same destination by other jobs are ignored.

  • The Client Control facility might not be able to start a computer that incorporates more than one network interface card.

  • If you execute a job with Start the target computer if it is not running specified, some computers might freeze during startup. This occurs when the interval between startup requests from JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Manager or JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Agent (relay system) is too short in relation to the startup time of the computer. You can resolve this issue by changing the following registry value of JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Manager or JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Agent (relay system) to a larger value than the startup time of the PC.

    Registry keys:

    - For JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Manager

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\HITACHI\JP1/IT Desktop Management - Manager\DM

    - For JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Agent (relay system) on a 32-bit OS

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HITACHI\JP1/IT Desktop Management - Agent\DMP

    - For JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 - Agent (relay system) on a 64-bit OS

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\HITACHI\JP1/IT Desktop Management - Agent\DMP
