3.2.4 Executing multicast distribution

After you decide the system configuration, you can use multicast distribution by following the procedure below.

  1. Enable multicast distribution when setting up the hosts that will send or receive multicast distribution.

  2. When creating a job on the managing server, specify Multicast distribution as the distribution method.

Each step is described in more detail below.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Setup

When setting up a higher system to which managed computers will connect, specify the settings for multicast distribution. The location of the relevant settings is as follows:

Specify the port numbers and multicast address during the setup process. You also need to specify the packet size. You can then specify this multicast address as the destination for a job. Note that jobs for which unicast distribution is specified will be distributed by the unicast method even if you specify multicast distribution during setup.

Notes on setup:
  • You do not need to configure multicast distribution on systems that are higher in the hierarchy than the systems to which managed computers connect. For example, if the connection sequence is manager, relay system, then managed computer, you do not need to set up multicast distribution on the manager.

  • If a router that is not compatible with IP multicasting is present between managed computers and the higher system to which they connect, unicast distribution takes place instead of multicast distribution. In this scenario, do not specify multicast distribution for the higher system or relay system. If you specify multicast distribution, a delay occurs while the system switches to unicast distribution.

(2) Creating a job for multicast distribution

You can specify multicast distribution at the job level. To distribute a specific job using multicast distribution, in the Create Job dialog box, display the Job Distribution Attributes page and specify Multicast distribution in the Distribution methods area. For details about how to create a job, see 7.3 Performing remote installation.
