JP1 Version 12 JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 Distribution Function Administration Guide

3.1.4 Using the distribution function in a firewall environment

You can use JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 in systems that use a firewall without compromising the security of the system as a whole. Even when a firewall controls the network between the distribution site where the managing server is located and the departmental networks where the relay system is deployed, software can still be distributed from the managing server to the relay system.

This subsection describes how to use JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 in an environment that uses firewalls.

When you use JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 in an environment that uses firewalls, you need to enter the port numbers used by JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 in the firewall settings. For details about these port numbers, see the description of port numbers in the JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 Overview and System Design Guide.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Supported firewalls

JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 supports the following types of firewall:

(a) Packet filtering firewall

A packet filtering firewall is an approach to building a firewall that limits which packets can pass through the firewall.

You can use JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 in an environment with a packet filtering firewall by setting the port numbers and IP addresses of the applicable nodes.

(b) Application gateway firewall

An application gateway firewall is an approach to building a firewall that prohibits packet relay and uses an application gateway to control access.

Because an application gateway firewall uses gateways to control access at the application level, you must permit access to JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 in the firewall settings.
