1.1.5 Installation tailored to user circumstances

It can be handy for users to have remote installation initiated by the managing server. However, it can also result in unnecessary software being installed on a managed computer, or installation occurring at a time that is inconvenient for the user. You can avoid this by using Send package, allow client users to choose.

When the managing server executes a Send package, allow client users to choose job, this grants the user of the managed computer permission to install the package. The user can use Package Setup Manager to view a list of software he or she has permission to install, and install only the necessary software. On agents for UNIX, however, use the rdsinsset -x command instead of Package Setup Manager to install the package.

This approach is also useful when you want the user to interact with the installer manually throughout the installation process.

The following figure shows the general procedure for installation tailored to user circumstances:

  1. Execute a Send package, allow client users to choose job on the managing server.

The computer specified as the target of the job is granted permission to install the package.

At this point, the package remains on the managing server or the relay system and is not yet distributed to the computer.

  2. The user selects the package in Package Setup Manager and begins the installation process.

The selected software is downloaded to the computer and installation begins.

For details about how to use Package Setup Manager, see 12.4 Operating Package Setup Manager.
