C.8 Estimating the amount of data flowing over a network

To estimate the amount of data flowing over the network for using Performance Management, you need to estimate the amount of data that flows when Performance Management performs monitoring#.

#

When you change the Performance Management settings, they are sent over the network. However, you do not need to include such data exchange in the system estimates because they are temporary and used only for designing and building a Performance Management system.

Usually, two types of data are exchanged over a network when Performance Management performs monitoring:
  • Communication data that is generated when alarms occur

  • Communication data that is generated when obtaining report information

Organization of this subsection

(1) Estimating the amount of communication data that is generated when alarms occur

When an alarm occurs, PFM - Agent or PFM - RM sends an alarm event to PFM - Manager. The amount of data that is generated is approximately 5 kilobytes per event. As the amount is negligible, you do not need to include it in the system estimates.

(2) Estimating the amount of communication data that is generated when obtaining report information

The largest amount of communication data that is generated while Performance Management performs monitoring is the data that is generated when obtaining report information. If you periodically obtain reports, we recommend that you estimate the amount of this communication data.

The action of obtaining report information generates communication data. This data is sent from PFM - Agent or PFM - RM to PFM - Manager. The amount of data changes depending on the amount of report information. For this reason, you need to calculate the amount of communication data for each report. You can use the formula in Formula for determining the amount of data required for receiving report data at one time (B1) in [Step 1] in C.7(2) Estimating memory size when the GUI is being used.
