1.7.1 Operations that must be executed with administrator privileges

This subsection describes the operations that must be executed with administrator privileges when Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista is used. Note that the system drive is assumed as C drive in this description.

Organization of this subsection
(1) Installing programs
(2) Executing the Development Environment Instant Setup functionality and Eclipse setup functionality
(3) Using the commands provided with Application Server
(4) Updating definition files provided with Application Server
(5) Operation in Eclipse for restricted folders
(6) Starting and stopping an embedded database using a shortcut

(1) Installing programs

You must use administrator privileges to install programs, such as Developer and Eclipse in the directory under C:\Program Files. During installation, if the UAC dialog box of Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista is displayed, enter the password for the Administrator account in the UAC dialog box.

(2) Executing the Development Environment Instant Setup functionality and Eclipse setup functionality

Make sure that you execute the Development Environment Instant Setup functionality and Eclipse setup functionality with administrator privileges. A user not having administrator privileges cannot start the Development Environment Instant Setup functionality and Eclipse setup functionality.

When you use the administrator privileges to execute the Development Environment Instant Setup functionality and Eclipse setup functionality, right click the following start menu shortcuts and select Run as Administrator:

Development Environment Instant Setup functionality
  • Cosminexus - First Setup - Setup Debugging Environment
  • Cosminexus - First Setup - Unsetup Debugging Environment
  • Cosminexus - First Setup - Modify Debugging Environment

Eclipse setup functionality
  • Cosminexus - First Setup - Setup Eclipse
  • Cosminexus - First Setup - Unsetup Eclipse

(3) Using the commands provided with Application Server

The commands provided by Application Server must be executed using the administrator privileges. Use Administrator: Command prompt to execute the commands provided by Application Server.

Use the functionality provided in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista to start Administrator: Command prompt. The following is a start-up example.

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Choose Programs - Accessories.
  3. Right-click Command prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
If the Administrator password and confirmation is requested, follow the instructions on the window, enter the password, and provide the confirmation information.

(4) Updating definition files provided with Application Server

The definition files provided with Application Server must be updated using administrator privileges. If a user not having administrator privileges attempts to update a definition file, the definition file in the directory under C:\Program Files will not be updated. The files updated by the user not having administrator privileges are stored under the following directory:

C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore

Note that Application Server is started using administrator privileges, so the contents of the definition file updated by the user not having administrator privileges are ignored.

(5) Operation in Eclipse for restricted folders

Administrator privileges are required for operating the directories under C:\Program Files and directories under C:\windows. If a user not having administrator privileges exports a file or saves the Eclipse workspace for these restricted directories, the file to be operated is redirected using the redirection functionality and is stored at the following location:

C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files

The file can be read and written from Eclipse as if the actual file is below C:\Program Files; however the entities of the exported and saved files are stored in the above location.

(6) Starting and stopping an embedded database using a shortcut

You must have administrator privileges to start and stop the embedded database using the Start menu shortcuts.

Right-click the following Start menu shortcuts, and then select Run as Administrator:
