3.1.3 Remote control mode in the multi-connection environment

When multiple controllers are connected to a single agent, only one controller can obtain the exclusive mode. The remaining controllers assume the view mode. When the controller currently in the exclusive mode relinquishes permission, or when it severs the connection, a message dialog box appears in remaining controllers stating that the exclusive mode is now available.

Three examples are described below explaining how the remote control mode changes in the multi-connection environment. Let's assume that three controllers are connected to one agent, each machine and its permission level is shown below:

Figure 3-4 Flow of remote control mode changes (initial state)

[Figure]

Organization of this subsection
(1) One of the controllers acquires the exclusive mode
(2) One of the controllers acquires the exclusive mode and then cancels it (or severs the connection)
(3) One of the controllers acquires the exclusive mode but the agent presses Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys

(1) One of the controllers acquires the exclusive mode

When Controller 1 request the exclusive mode, other machines will shift their modes as shown below:

Figure 3-5 Flow of remote control mode changes (when Controller 1 is set to the exclusive mode)

[Figure]

  1. Controller 1 requests the exclusive mode.
  2. A message dialog box appears on the agent, stating the controller's request to acquire the exclusive mode. Choosing OK will put the agent into view mode.
  3. A message dialog box appears on Controller 2, stating that another controller has acquired the exclusive mode.

    [Figure]

Choosing OK will put Controller 2 into view mode.

(2) One of the controllers acquires the exclusive mode and then cancels it (or severs the connection)

In example (1), Controller 1 acquires the exclusive mode and the remaining controllers assume the view mode. If Controller 1 relinquishes the exclusive mode, the remaining machines will experience the following mode changes. The same changes will apply when Controller 1 severs the connection with the agent.

Figure 3-6 Flow of remote control mode changes (when Controller 1 is disconnected from the agent)

[Figure]

  1. Controller 1 reverts to the shared mode.
  2. On Controller 2, which was originally in the shared mode, a message dialog box appears stating that another controller has released the exclusive mode. However, Controller 2 remains in the view mode.

    [Figure]

(3) One of the controllers acquires the exclusive mode but the agent presses Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys

In example (1), Controller 1 acquires the exclusive mode and the remaining machines assume the view mode. If the agent presses the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys, the other machines will experience the following mode changes.

Figure 3-7 Flow of remote control mode changes (when the agent presses the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys)

[Figure]

  1. On the agent, press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys.
  2. On Controller 1, a message dialog box appears asking you whether it is OK to change the permission level to the shared mode.

    [Figure]

Choosing Yes will put both Controller 1 and the agent into the shared mode. (No mode changes occur if the user of Controller 1 chooses No in the dialog box.)
  3. On Controller 2, which was originally in the shared mode, a message dialog box appears stating that another controller has released the exclusive mode. However, Controller 2 remains in the view mode.
