5.1.1 Executing remote collection

You can execute remote collection from Remote Installation Manager. Remote Installation Manager is started by choosing the Remote Installation Manager icon in the JP1/Software Distribution Manager or JP1/Software Distribution Client group.

(3) Checking the execution results

(1) Creating and executing a job

The job-creation procedure for remote collection is described below. For details about the actual operation and setup information, see 8.2 Creating a job.

To create a job for remote collection:

  1. In the Destination, System Configuration or Directory Information window, from the Execute menu, choose Execute Job; or, in the Job Definition window, from the File menu, choose Create Job.
The Define New Job dialog box appears.
  2. In the Define New Job dialog box, specify a job type and choose OK.
The three types of jobs for executing remote collection are Collect files from client, Collect files from client to relay system, and Acquire collected files from relay system. Select one of them.
The Create Job dialog box appears.
  3. In the Create Job dialog box, specify items on each page.
This dialog box contains the following pages and setup information. Note that the Job, Destination, and Schedule pages are the same for all jobs, but the Collect File page is displayed only for creation of a remote collection job.
    Job page
Specify a name for the job.
For details about how to specify a value on the Job page, see 8.2.3 Setting up the Job page.
    Destination page
Specify the systems at which remote collection is to be performed. You must specify at least one system.
For details about how to specify a value on the Destination page, see 8.2.4 Setting up the Destination page.
    Collect File page
Specify information about the software to be remote-collected.
For details about how to specify a value on the Collect File page, see (2) Settings on the Collect File page.
    Schedule page
Specify for the job the job registration date/time, execution date/time, and execution time limit.
For details about how to specify values on the Schedule page, see 8.2.5 Setting up the Schedule page.
  4. Choose Execute, Save, or Save and Execute to save and/or execute the job.
The job is saved or executed.

(2) Settings on the Collect File page

When you create a Collect files from client job, you use the Create Job dialog box's Collect File page to specify the files to be collected and the directory to be used to store the collected files. You can specify individual files or entire directories as collection targets. When a directory is specified, all files under the directory are archived (as a single unit) and collected. A file with the .dmz extension is assigned to an archive file.

[Figure]

Target file
This box shows the files or directories specified for remote collection. You can specify up to 100 collection targets.
If you specify directories with the same name but under different drives as targets, you must ensure that they do not contain files with the same name. If duplicately-named directories contain a file with the same name, one of the files will be overwritten by the other one during remote collection.

Directory for saving collected files
Specify the directory in which you wish to save the remotely collected files. The specified collection targets are remotely collected into the directory specified here under the following file names:
  • When the host identifier is used as the ID key for operations
    target-host-name-or-IP-address-(by-node-identification-key)-host-identifier\archive-file-name
  • When the host identifier is not used as the ID key for operations
    target-host-name-or-IP-address-(by-node-identification-key)\archive-file-name

You can perform the following operations on the Collect File page:

(a) Adding target files

On the Collect File page, choosing Add displays the Specify Target File dialog box. In this dialog box, you can specify target files to be added.

Figure 5-2 Specify Target File dialog box

[Figure]

In the File name by full path field, enter the path name of the file or directory to be added as a collection target. Note that if \ is specified at the end of the path name for a collection target, the job results in an error. Express the path name for the collection target as a maximum of 256 characters if the client's OS is Windows, and a maximum of 63 characters if the client's OS is UNIX. If the full file path exceeds 259 characters during recovery, the file will not be recovered. You can also specify the following environment variables in the File name by full path field.

Table 5-1 Environment variables that can be specified in the File name by full path field

Environment variable Description
%NETMDMP% Directory in which JP1/Software Distribution Manager (relay manager) or JP1/Software Distribution Client is installed
%WINDOWS% Directory in which Windows is installed
%SYSTEM% System or System32 directory under the directory in which Windows is installed#

#: System directory is used when the OS of the job destination is Windows 98 or Windows Me. System32 is used in all other cases.

(b) Deleting target files

From Target file, select the files or paths to be deleted, and click the Delete button.

(c) Specifying collection options

On the Collect File page, choosing Details displays the Detailed Options for Remote Collection dialog box. In this dialog box, you can specify remote collection options, such as the collection time at the client, whether or not files are to be compressed during collection, and an external program that is to be started.

Figure 5-3 Detailed Options for Remote Collection dialog box

[Figure]

The following are the options provided in this dialog box:

Collection timing
Specify the remote collection time at the relay manager/system or at the client:
  • When client is active
Execute remote collection only while the system at the relay manager/system or client is active. If the system is not active at the time of job execution, remote collection is executed the next time the system is started.
  • When client starts
Following job execution, execute remote collection the next time the relay manager/system or client is started.

Compress
Specify whether or not the files are to be compressed during remote collection. The default is Enabled.

Specify external programs to start on destination client
When remote collection is executed, the relay manager/system or client can execute user-specific processing by starting an external program at a specified time:
  • Before collection
Starts the specified external program immediately before remote collection. Set this option when you want to process the data at the relay manager/system or client (to perform data-format conversion, for example) before collection.
  • After collection
Starts the specified external program immediately after remote collection.
  • Upon collection error
Starts the specified external program in the event of a remote collection error. You cannot specify this item for a UNIX client.
Specify the path name of the external program as up to 128 characters (for a PC) or up to 64 characters (for a WS), including the drive name. Note the following about specifying an external program:
  • If the path name of an external program contains any spaces, you must enclose the entire path name in quotation marks ("). To start an external program on a UNIX client, you cannot specify a path name that includes spaces.
  • The path name of an external program cannot contain the character string %HITACHI_REG\xxx% (xxx: any characters). This character string indicates the path of a Hitachi program product and is a reserved word in JP1/Software Distribution. It is important that general users not use this character string.

(3) Checking the execution results

The managing server monitors the job execution status at specified intervals and displays the status in the Job Status window. The Job Status window displays the execution status of all jobs. You can identify the type of job by the icon that is displayed in front of each job name.

Selecting a Collect files from client job in the left-hand frame displays the paths of the collected files as the detailed job information in the right-hand frame. To restore an archived file, you should check this path before executing Unarchiver.

For details about the information that is displayed in the Job Status window, the display format of the detailed information for each job, and job re-execution, see 8.4 Checking job execution status.
