You may not always be able to complete package distribution while the network is available. In such a case, you can manage the job execution period by suspending the job that is being executed. At a later time, you can resume execution of the suspended job from where it was suspended.
The following three methods are available for suspending and resuming a job:
- Sending a suspension or resumption instruction to a relay manager/system from the managing server
You can instruct the relay manager/system to suspend or resume job execution by executing a Suspend file transfer or Resume file transfer job, respectively, at the managing server. For example, by specifying a schedule for these jobs in advance, you could suspend package distribution when business hours begin and resume package distribution when business hours are over.
- Sending a suspension or resumption instruction to the managing server itself
From the Execute menu of Remote Installation Manager, you can choose Suspend/Resume File Transfer and then Suspend or Resume to instruct the managing server to which Remote Installation Manager is connected to suspend or resume job execution.
- Executing the dcmsusp command at the managing server
You can use the dcmsusp command to suspend and resume job execution automatically. You can specify suspension for both a relay manager/system and a local system.
These three methods can be used concurrently. For example, you can first suspend job execution by executing a Suspend file transfer job for the relay manager, and then resume file transfer by selecting Resume at that relay manager's Remote Installation Manager.
For details about the suspension and resumption application scope, see 6.1.7(6)(c) Scope of job suspension and resumption in the manual Description and Planning Guide.
- Organization of this subsection
- (1) Relationships between job suspension/resumption and other operations
- (2) What happens when the route to a machine is changed while a job is suspended
(1) Relationships between job suspension/resumption and other operations
This section explains the relationships between job suspension/resumption and other operations.
- Relationship to multicast distribution
- A job for which multicast distribution is specified cannot be suspended. Even if you suspend the relay system, execution will continue. However, even a job for which multicast distribution is specified can be suspended if it is being executed at a client where one or more Install package jobs have already been suspended.
- Relationship to split distribution
- A job for which split distribution is specified can be suspended just as with a normal job. If the job is suspended while a split package is being transferred, transfer will resume beginning with the remainder of the package. The period between the time when the job is further split upon its suspension and the time when distribution is resumed becomes the distribution interval.
- Relationship to Client Control
- A job for which Client Control is specified can be suspended just as with a normal job. The following occurs when a job for which Client Control is specified is suspended or resumed:
- When Boot the client at the job destination or Shut down the client after the job execution is specified
- The client's power is turned on.
- <Job suspension instruction>
- The client's power is turned off.
- <Job resumption instruction>
- The client's power is turned on.
- The job is completed.
- The client's power is turned off.
- When Boot the client at the job destination is specified
- The client's power is turned on.
- <Job suspension instruction>
- The client's power stays on.
- <Job resumption instruction>
- The job is completed.
- The client's power stays off.
- When Shut down the client after the job execution is specified
- The job is executing.
- <Job suspension instruction>
- The client's power is turned off.
- <Job resumption instruction>
- The client's power stays off and the job is not resumed.
(2) What happens when the route to a machine is changed while a job is suspended
This section explains what happens when the route to a machine is changed while a job is suspended.
- When the route to a suspended relay manager/system is changed, the suspended status is not cancelled and the suspended job remains as is. The job result is reported to the higher system via the old route.
- When the route to a client with a suspended job is changed, whether or not the files that have already been transferred to the client are deleted will depend on the setting of the Delete package information of the system previously connected to the client check box on the Installation Options page of the client's setup.
