3.1.4 Notes on collecting system information

You should note the following points about executing a Get system information from client job. For notes about collecting each system information item, see 2.2.1 Acquiring system information in the manual Description and Planning Guide.

Organization of this subsection
(1) Windows NT client
(2) Acquiring registry information after upgrading
(3) Specifying Acquire modified information
(4) When the relay manager/system or client OS is Windows NT
(5) Common notes

(1) Windows NT client

You cannot obtain system information from a Windows NT client about a network drive or drive without access rights.

(2) Acquiring registry information after upgrading

Registry information may not be acquired after upgrading to JP1/Software Distribution 06-00 or later from an earlier version. Resend the registry collection items before collecting the registry information.

(3) Specifying Acquire modified information

Inconsistencies may arise in the system information collected at a central manager, relay manager, or relay system if the system configuration is altered during operation or if you change the job execution route when executing a Get system information from client job with Acquire modified information specified.

To avoid inconsistencies, note the following points:

JP1/Software Distribution version
To execute a Get system information from client job with Acquire modified information specified at a relay manager or relay system running JP1/Software Distribution 06-71 or later, the higher system must be the same version.
Inconsistencies may arise when system information is reported to the higher system from a relay manager or relay system if the higher system is running JP1/Software Distribution 06-53 or an earlier version that does not support Get system information from client jobs with Acquire modified information specified.

Setup requirements
In an environment that uses the facility for automatically registering the system configuration, you must complete the following settings on each machine:
Central manager
On the System Configuration page for setting server setup items, enable the Automatically apply the system configuration check box.
Relay manager
  • Server setup items
On the System Configuration page, enable the Automatically apply the system configuration check box.
  • Relay manager setup items
Enable the Also report this computer's inventory to the server check box on the Communication page for detailed setup.
Relay system
  • On the System Configuration page for basic setup of the relay system, enable the Automatically apply the system configuration check box.
  • On the Communication page for detailed setup of the relay system, enable the Also report this computer's inventory to the server check box.
Client
On the Connection Destination page for client setup, enable the Also report this computer's inventory to the server check box.

When changing the system configuration
If you change the system configuration in either of the ways listed below, acquire system information from an added or changed client by executing a Get system information from client job with Acquire all information specified:
  • Executing a Get system configuration information job
  • Adding a client or changing the transmission route at Remote Installation Manager

When executing a Get system information from client job
  • As a result of an error at a relay system or some other problem, system information may be acquired at some point via a route that is outside the system configuration. After restoring the system, execute a Get system information from client job with Acquire all information specified.
  • To acquire system information at a machine on which a relay manager or relay system is installed, specify the client on that machine as the destination of the Get system information from client job, not the relay manager or relay system.

(4) When the relay manager/system or client OS is Windows NT

If the relay manager/system or client OS is Windows NT and a non-administrator user attempts to execute a Get system information from client job, some of the system information collected by WMI might not be acquired.
