8.1.1 Acquiring updates

You can acquire Windows updates from the Windows Update Management dialog box. The Windows Update Management dialog box, which displays a list of updates provided by Microsoft Corporation, allows you to acquire any update (or updates) that you want.

Note:

To install a feature update to Windows 10, you have to manually download the ISO file from Microsoft's website.

You can display the Windows Update Management dialog box as follows:

  1. Start the Remote Install Manager.

  2. Select Options, and then Windows Update Management.

    The Windows Update Management dialog box appears.

List of windows updates

Available updates and acquired updates are displayed in list format. By default, updates are displayed in the descending order of the released date, language, and the update program ID combination. By clicking the label, you can sort the displayed updates in ascending or descending order.

Display Settings button

Use this button to display the Display Settings dialog box from which you can set the items to be displayed in List of windows updates.

Package button

Use this button to package the updates selected in List of windows updates.

Description tab

This tab displays descriptions of the updates selected in List of windows updates.

Details tab

This tab displays details of the updates selected in List of windows updates.

Setup button

Click this button when you want to set the connection destinations that will be acquiring the updates, enable automatic acquisition of updates, and specify packaging settings.

Close button

Use this button to close the dialog box.

The rest of this subsection describes how to specify the settings necessary to acquire updates, how to acquire updates, and how to delete them.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Specifying network settings for acquiring updates

To acquire updates, you have first to set an Internet connection method and other network information.

You can set network information for acquiring updates by using the Network Settings panel that you can display from the Windows Update Management dialog box. You can display the Network Settings panel as follows:

  1. Click the Setup button.

    The Setup dialog box appears.

  2. Select the Network Settings tab.

    The Network Settings panel appears.

By using the Network Settings panel, you can specify the settings described below.

(a) Connection settings

Specify the connection settings used for connecting to the Internet as well as for acquiring updates.

Connect to the Internet via a proxy server

To connect to the Internet by using the proxy server, select this check box.

By default, this check box is cleared.

Use the connection settings in Internet Options

To acquire updates by using the settings specified in the Internet Options of Internet Explorer, select this radio button. By default, this radio button is selected.

Specify a proxy server

To acquire updates by specifying a proxy server, select this radio button. If you select this radio button, you also have to specify the IP address and port number of the proxy server.

Authentication information

Specify the username and password to be used for authentication with the proxy server you have designated in Address. The username and password must not exceed 260 characters and 30 characters, respectively. You do not have to specify authentication information if authentication with a proxy server is not enabled.

(b) Communication settings

The following settings are available to deal with communication errors:

Retry interval to be used when a communication error occurs

Specify the retry interval in the range from 1 to 7,200 seconds, which is to be applied after the occurrence of an error during data transfer. By default, 5 seconds is set as the retry interval.

Maximum number of retries to be used when a communication error occurs

Specify the number of retries in the range from 0 to 999 times, which is to be applied after the occurrence of an error during data transfer. By default, 5 times is set as the number of retries. When 0 is specified, no retry is executed.

Retries are executed as many times as specified at the interval specified in Retry interval to be used when a communication error occurs.

Timeout period for a communication server

Specify the time-out period in the range from 0 to 60 seconds, which is to be applied upon the occurrence of an error during data transfer. By default, 20 seconds is set as the timeout period. When 0 is specified, the time-out period set by the OS is applied.

(2) Updating the list of updates

To update the updates displayed in List of windows updates, acquire the updates information from the support service site. For details, see the description of Setting information for connecting to the support service on the manual JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 Administration Guide.

When the updates information is successfully acquired, the updates displayed in List of windows updates become updated.
