JP1 Version 12 JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 Distribution Function Administration Guide

1.1.1 Overview of the remote installation process

The remote installation process consists of two steps: packaging in which the software to be installed is registered, and creating and executing a remote installation job in which the registered package is distributed to a remote computer and installed.

The following figure shows an overview of the remote installation process:

Organization of this subsection

(1) Package software for distribution

Before you can remotely install software, you need to package the software on the managing server. This process uses a program called the Packager.

The Packager stores both the software for remote installation and the information necessary for installation in a location (referred to as a cabinet) on the managing server. Software stored in this manner is called a package.

You can view and delete packages stored in a cabinet from the Packager or from the managing server. However, you cannot rename a package or move it to another cabinet. For this reason, carefully consider the cabinet structure on the managing server before packaging the software. You can create cabinets on the managing server in advance, or create them from the Packager during packaging.

Software that has been packaged by the Packager can then be distributed by using Remote Install Manager or by using commands. You cannot use the ITDM-compatible distribution function to distribute these packages. For details about packaging operations, see 7.1 Packaging method.

Packages that were created by using the distribution module in JP1/IT Desktop Management 2 can be distributed by the ITDM-compatible distribution function.

(2) Create and execute remote installation jobs

After packaging the software you want to remotely install, you then create and execute a job on the managing server that initiates the remote installation process. The remote installation process is controlled by Remote Install Manager. For details about remote installation operations, see 7.3 Performing remote installation.

Besides job creation and execution, the remote installation process includes tasks related to the management of cabinets and packages and the deletion of packages from relay systems. For details about how to manage cabinets and packages, see 1.1.7 Managing cabinets and packages. For details about how to delete packages from relay systems, see 1.1.9 Deleting packages from relay systems and management relay servers.
