1.2.4 Select a suitable monitoring method

In Performance Management, you can select different monitoring methods, depending on the severity level of the monitored server, as well as the cost and time available for designing and configuring the operation monitoring system.

Agent monitoring

In order to monitor the server's operating status, you must install the agent on the server to be monitored. This enables you to use a number of monitoring options to monitor a server's operating status.

Remote monitoring

Remote monitoring means that you monitor the operating status of servers from another host. There is no need to install the agent on the monitored server. This is particularly useful when you want to monitor the operations of a system that is already running. Although fewer items are monitored than in agent monitoring, you can use a single PFM - RM to collect and manage performance data from multiple monitoring targets (the PFM - RM host itself can be specified as a monitored host).

PFM - RM features two concepts: remote agent and group agent. Remote agent configures monitoring conditions with an interface similar to traditional agent monitoring. Group agent monitors performance data consolidated from various remote agents.

You can combine multiple monitoring methods. To achieve optimal operation monitoring, two monitoring forms are provided for each monitored server: detailed monitoring by using PFM - Agent, or quick monitoring by using PFM - RM.
