5.1.5 Starting and stopping the IE probe service using the Windows services

The following shows the settings necessary to start and stop the IE Probe Daemon service using the Windows services.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Setting the Probe action condition definition file

If you use the Windows services to start and stop the IE Probe Daemon service, change the setting of the Probe action condition definition file.

  1. Set Y to the value of the ie_service_flag in the [General] section of the Probe action condition definition file (esp.conf).

When you upgrade PFM - Agent for Service Response, the Probe action condition definition file does not have the entry of the ie_service_flag in the [General] section. Add the ie_service_flag entry and set the value in the file.

For details about the Probe action condition definition file, see 8.2 Probe action condition definition file (esp.conf).

To apply the definitions specified in the Probe action condition definition file, you must restart PFM - Agent for Service Response.

(2) Setting the account for measurement

Create an account for measuring the performance of the Internet Explorer operations.

(3) Setting the environment for measuring the IE scenario

The following shows the procedure for setting the environment for measuring the IE scenario.

  1. Use the account for measurement and log on to the Windows.

  2. From the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, choose Internet Options, then the Internet Options window appears.

  3. In the Internet Options window, set the environment of measuring the IE scenario.

  4. Click the OK button in the Internet Options window.

(4) Recording the IE scenarios

The following shows the procedure for operating in the IE windows section of the IE Recorder (main) window and recording the operations as an IE scenario.

  1. Use the account for measurement, and log on to the Windows.

  2. In the IE Recorder (main) window, from the File menu, choose New.

    A new IE scenario file is created.

  3. From the Action menu, choose Record.

    Start recording the IE scenario.

  4. In Address, enter the URL that you start to record, click the Enter key.

    The Web page is displayed in the IE window section.

  5. Operate in the displayed Web page in the IE window section.

    The information of the operations is recorded as an IE scenario. The recorded information is displayed in the Operation list. You can record not only an operation, but also a series of tasks consisting of multiple sets of operations in the Internet Explorer as an IE scenario.

  6. From the Action menu, choose Stop.

    Stop recording the IE scenario.

(5) Check whether the IE scenarios are replayed correctly

Conduct a measurement after you check whether the recorded IE scenarios are replayed correctly in the IE scenario created in (4) Recording the IE scenarios.

(6) Setting the log-on account for the service

You need Administrator permissions to set the log-on account for the service.

The following shows the procedure for setting the log-on account for the Extensible Service IE Probe service.

  1. From the Start menu of Windows, choose Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tool, and then Services.

  2. Select Extensible Service IE Probe service, from the Action menu, choose Properties, and then the Properties of Extensible Service IE Probe dialog box appears.

  3. Click the This account button on the Log On tab, then the Browse button is activated.

  4. Specify a user account# that executes the service in the Account text box. Click the Browse button, the user account can be specified in the Select User dialog box.

    Specify the user account that executes the service is the account for checking and measuring the IE scenarios you use in (5) Check whether the IE scenarios are replayed correctly.

  5. Enter the password in the Password and Confirm password text boxes, and then click the OK button.

(7) Starting the service

You need Administrator permissions to start the service.

The following shows the procedure for starting the IE Probe Daemon service.

  1. From the Start menu of Windows, choose Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tool, and then Services.

  2. From the list of services, click the Start button for, in this order, the PFM - Agent Store for Service Response service, and the PFM - Agent for Service Response service.

    The Extensible Service IE Probe service is started.

(8) Stopping the service

You need Administrator permissions to stop the service.

The following shows the procedure for stopping the IE Probe Daemon service.

  1. From the Start menu of Windows, choose Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tool, and then Services.

  2. From the list of services, click the Stop button for, in this order, the PFM - Agent for Service Response service, and the PFM - Agent Store for Service Response service.

    The Extensible Service IE Probe service is stopped.
