A SMTP probe creates a message text of a specified size and measures the time required for completing message transmission to the destination address.

The following describes and provides notes on a SMTP operating environment.

Subject

The subject in the measurement email header is "Test mail from PFM - Agent for Service Response.".

Text

The text for measurement emails is a character string consisting of the character o.

Attached file

The SMTP probe sends only the header and text; it does not attach any file to measurement emails.

Handling of the transmitted measurement emails

After sending measurement emails to the target server, the SMTP probe does not delete the emails. If the measurement covers a long period of time, a large number of measurement emails will accumulate, and a shortage of disk space may occur at the target mail server. To avoid this, you should use one of the following methods to delete emails periodically from the target mail server:

• Deleting emails by registering a measurement condition
  Register a POP3 or IMAP4 measurement condition with the email deletion option enabled, and then perform that measurement to delete emails.
  
• Having the user delete emails
  Have the user periodically delete the measurement emails that were sent by the SMTP probe.
