Job Management Partner 1 Version 10 Job Management Partner 1/Performance Management Planning and Configuration Guide

3.1 General procedure for configuring an operation monitoring system and the range supported by Performance Management

This section describes the general process flow for when the system administrator configures an operation monitoring system, and the range supported by Performance Management. Before designing an operation monitoring system, confirm what you can do with the operation monitoring system life cycle and Performance Management.

For details about the functions Performance Management provides, see 4. Performance Management Functions.

System configuration project phase

In this phase, a project is proposed to configure an operation monitoring system. Factors that should be examined include the purpose of the system, cost and structure of the architecture, and schedule.

If Performance Management is used, monitoring agent products that meet the system requirements need to be selected.

Design phase

In this phase, the staff designs the foundation of the operation monitoring system.

The first things to be designed include the system configuration and network configuration. If other systems, such as an integrated operations management system (JP1/IM), a service level management system (JP1/ITSLM), or a network monitoring system (NNM), are linked to the operation monitoring system, the format in which they are linked must also be examined.

Next, other factors are designed, including the selection of items to be monitored, measures to be taken when the system is in a critical state, the display format of monitoring reports, and rules for the operation monitoring system.

Functionality provided by Performance Management:
  • Calculation methods for system estimates including the amount of memory used

  • Monitoring templates and data models (records) for selecting items to monitor

  • Linking with other systems (including JP1/IM and NNM)

  • Other functions

Configuration phase

In this phase, the operation monitoring system is implemented and the various settings are configured according to what was examined during the design phase. After Performance Management is installed, parameters and the environment are configured.

Functionality provided by Performance Management:
  • GUI (the window of PFM - Web Console) to configure the various settings

  • Commands to configure the various settings

Operation phase

In this phase, the operation monitoring system is in operation. Operation monitoring data is collected, appropriate measures are taken when the system reaches a critical state, and reports are examined to analyze the performance status.

Functionality provided by Performance Management:
  • Performance data collection and management

  • Alarm notification when performance data reaches a certain threshold

  • Performance data reporting

  • Performance data output

  • Backing up and restoring performance data and importing backup data by using operation commands

  • Other functions

Analysis and reconfiguration phase

In this phase, problems in the system being monitored are analyzed based on the performance data acquired from the operation monitoring system and any necessary reconfiguration is performed.
