A.4 Creating and deleting symbols
When you use NNM to monitor the operation status of JP1/AJS3 - Manager operations, the execution status of jobs in jobnets, and the operation status of JP1/AJS3 - Agent with symbols, you have to first create the symbols you are going to use in NNM.
Symbols are classified into two types:

Symbols of objects representing the operation status of JP1/AJS3 - Manager, execution status of jobs in jobnets, and operation status of JP1/AJS3 - Agent

Symbols of objects representing statuses as reported by the OpenView Status Report job
This section describes how to create and delete the two types of symbols, as well as their attributes.

(1) Creating symbols
When receiving a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) trap from a monitored JP1/AJS3 host, NNM automatically creates the JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols at the time of executing the ovw command. The UDP protocol attains the SNMP traps; therefore, the reliability of transmission of SNMP traps depends on the UDP protocol. If JP1/AJS3 - Manager operates in the cluster system mode, two JP1AJS2 symbols (one is a physical host and the other is a logical host) are created for one JP1/AJS3 - Manager host. When the OpenView Status Report job is used, an AJS2USER symbol is created. Note that a single AJS2USER symbol is created for each JP1/AJS3 - Manager host. A single symbol of the OpenView Status Report job indicates its status for both the physical host and the logical host.
See the figure below for each symbol. The same symbols are shown for both the primary node and the secondary node.

Alternatively, if NNM executes the ovw command before receiving an SNMP trap, the JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols are not created automatically. When this occurs, create the symbols manually.
There are three methods for creating symbols:

Creating symbols for a specified host
You can create symbols explicitly for a specified host. These symbols appear in the node submap even before an SNMP trap is received from the host.

Creating symbols for all hosts
You can create symbols for all hosts from which SNMP traps are received. The corresponding symbols do not appear in the node submap before an SNMP trap is received from a host.

The symbols created by Creating symbols for a specified host are JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols indicating the physical host.

To create a JP1AJS2 symbol indicating a logical host, use the Creating symbols for all hosts method or the Re-executing the ovw command method. It is required to receive SNMP straps from the logical hosts corresponding to primary and secondary nodes in a cluster system before creating the symbol.

The procedures for creating symbols are described below.
(a) Creating JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols for specified hosts
To create symbols for a specific host:

Execute the ovw command in NNM.
The IP Map appears.

Click the symbol of the host for which you want to create symbols.
The specified symbol changes to the selected status.

From Administer, choose JP1/AJS2 Manager, Create symbol and then For Selected Host.
The JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols are created for the host selected in step 2.

Double-click the symbol of the host selected in step 2.
The node submap appears.

Make sure that the JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols have been created.
When just created, the JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols are shown in a color that indicates an unknown status. Upon receiving an SNMP trap from the JP1/AJS3, the symbols change to a color that indicates a reported status. For details about the JP1AJS2 symbol, see A.5(1) Interpreting JP1AJS2 symbols shown in the node submap. For further details about the AJS2USER symbol, see A.6(1) Interpreting AJS2USER symbols shown in the node submap.
Be sure to delete any unnecessary symbols since both JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols are created at the same time. For further details, see (2) Deleting symbols.
(b) Creating JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols for all hosts
To create symbols for all hosts:

Execute the ovw command in NNM.
The IP Map appears.

From Administer, choose JP1/AJS2 Manager, Create Symbol and then For All Hosts.
The JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols are created for all hosts from which SNMP traps have been received. The symbols corresponding to the traps that have not been received at this operation are not created .

Double-click the symbol of a host from which an SNMP trap was received.
The node submap appears.

Make sure that the JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols have been created.
The JP1AJS2 and AJS2USER symbols are shown in a color that indicates a reported status. For details about the JP1AJS2 symbol, see A.5(1) Interpreting JP1AJS2 symbols shown in the node submap. For further details about the AJS2USER symbol, see A.6(1) Interpreting AJS2USER symbols shown in the node submap.

No symbol is created for a host from which no SNMP trap was received. The following example gives further details:

In this example, the monitoring host is receiving SNMP traps from hostA and hostB. Therefore, if you execute the For All Hosts menu command, the symbols appears in the node submaps of hostA and hostB. However, no symbol appears in the node submap of hostC because no SNMP trap was received from hostC.
