11.2.4 Remotely setting up a client

This subsection describes how to use the remote installation facility to change settings for JP1/Software Distribution Client (client) during client setup.

Organization of this subsection
(1) Using the remote installation facility to change client settings
(2) Client setup parameters

(1) Using the remote installation facility to change client settings

You can use the remote installation facility to change settings for JP1/Software Distribution Client (client) during client setup.

(a) Creating a parameter file (NETMDMP.INI)

In order to use the remote installation facility to change settings during client setup, you must create a parameter file for specifying the setup items. Name this parameter file NETMDMP.INI.

The following describes the format of the parameter file.

Format
client-setup-parameter=setting

Description
  • client-setup-parameter
    Specifies a parameter for a client setup item. Specification of this item is mandatory. For details about the client setup parameters, see (2) Client setup parameters.
  • setting
    Specifies the value of the setup item. For details about the settings, see (2) Client setup parameters.

Notes
  • The existing values cannot be deleted.
  • No spaces can be specified.
  • Each line must end with an linefeed code.
  • If an invalid client setup parameter is specified or no setting is specified for a parameter, the line is ignored (if there is a default value, the default value will be assumed). If a specified value exceeds the permitted length, the specified value up to the permitted maximum length is assumed.
  • If the OS of the client PC is Windows NT 4.0, Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003 and remote installation is performed using the client's Execute Job Backlog icon or by polling performed when Package Setup Manager is used, client settings can be changed only when the combination of client settings and logon user satisfies any of the three conditions shown in the following table:
    No. Combination of client setup settings and logon user
    1
    • On the Default Running Status/Polling page, the Client starts automatically at system boot check box is selected.
    • On the Security page, the Run the client with non-Administrator user permissions check box is selected.
    • Run the client with non-Administrator user permissions
    • Logon user is logged on with Administrator permissions.
    2
    • On the Default Running Status/Polling page, the Client starts automatically at system boot check box is cleared.
    • On the Security page, the Run the client with non-Administrator user permissions check box is selected and the Use the Package Setup Manager or Execute Job Backlog command when a client is not resident check box is cleared.
    • Logon user is logged on as a non-Administrator user.
    3
    • On the Security page, the Run the client with non-Administrator user permissions check box is cleared.
    • Logon user is the user who installed JP1/Software Distribution Client.

Example
HostName=server01
ServiceName=netmdm
EnableRealtimeInventory=YES
EnableMD5PackageID=YES

#1
This setup item cannot be used together with the Automatically specify the higher system that requested a job execution as the connection destination option.

#2
For a PC in a multi-polling environment, do not change the connection destination. If you have specified Poll multiple higher systems on the Connection Destination page in the client setup, and then change the connection destination, the priority is changed for the higher system at the connection destination.

#3
If you change the connection destination, the new connection destination is not added to Servers permitted to execute remote collection jobs on the Remote Collect Options page in the client setup.

#4
You must not change the connection destination if the PC is set to change the client's connection destination automatically. For details about automatic change of the client's connection destination, see 6.5.4 Automatically updating of the client connection destination in the manual Description and Planning Guide.
