(1) Offline installation procedure

The following figure shows the offline installation procedure.

Figure 7-17 Offline installation procedure

[Figure]

To perform offline installation:

  1. Package the software to be installed.
Use Packager to package the software to be installed. Note that some environment variables and settings are disabled or ignored in the Software Distribution Packaging dialog box. For details, see (6) Notes on offline installation.
  2. Prepare the installation medium.
Use a managing server to create a package information file containing the information on the package to be installed. When this file is created, an installation execution program and a program automatic operation execution file are output at the same time.
For details about how to prepare an installation medium, see (2) Preparing the installation medium.
  3. Transport the installation medium to the offline machine.
Store the package information file, the installation execution program, and the program automatic operation execution file on a CD-R or MO disk and transport it to the offline machine.
  4. Execute installation.
When you execute the installation execution program on the offline machine, the packages contained in the installation package information file are installed.
For details about how to execute installation, see (3) Installing on an offline machine.
  5. Transport the installation results file to the managing server.
Store the installation results file, which is output during installation, on a medium such as a floppy disk, CD-R, or MO disk, and transport it to the managing server. If the offline machine is connected to the managing server via a network, you can also send this file as an email attachment.
  6. Check the installation results.
Use a text editor to open and check the installation results file. You can also use the facility for collecting inventory information of the offline machine to check the installation results.
For details about how to check the installation results, see (4) Checking the installation results on the offline machine.

(2) Preparing the installation medium

To prepare the installation medium, use the Remote Installation Manager of the managing server that is managing the package. Store the following four files on the installation medium:

The method of creating a package information file is explained as follows. Note that the installation execution program and the program automatic operation execution file are created simultaneously with the package information file.

To create a package information file:

  1. From the Package window, select the package to be installed.
You can select multiple packages within the same cabinet.
  2. From File - Offline Machine Management, choose Creation of Installation Media.
The Creation of Installation Media dialog box is displayed.

Figure 7-18 Creation of Installation Media dialog box

    [Figure]

The packages selected in the Package window are displayed under List of the Installed Packages.
  3. If necessary, change the package installation order.
Packages are installed sequentially starting with the one at the top of the List of the Installed Packages. To change the installation order, select a package and choose [Figure] or [Figure].
  4. If necessary, change the package installation conditions.
To change the package installation conditions, such as the installation destination directory and software condition, select a package and choose Change. The Change Installation Conditions dialog box is displayed and you can change the installation conditions.
This is the same dialog box as the Change Installation Conditions dialog box that is used during remote installation.
Note that all functions on the Schedule page are disabled and cannot be changed. For details about the other settings in the Change Installation Conditions dialog box, see 2.3.2(3) Changing installation conditions.
  5. Choose Create.
The Browse for Folder dialog box is displayed.
  6. Select the package information file, the installation execution program, and the program automatic operation execution file, and then click OK.
A dialog box indicates that an installation medium is being created, and the package information file, the installation execution program, and the program automatic operation execution file are created in the selected folder.

(3) Installing on an offline machine

Transport the prepared installation medium to the offline machine where the package is to be installed. The method of installing the package at the offline machine is explained as follows.

Note that during offline installation execution, several settings in the client become invalid. For details, see (6) Notes on offline installation.

To install the package on the offline machine:

  1. Ensure that JP1/Software Distribution facilities are not being executed at the offline machine.
If other JP1/Software Distribution facilities are being executed, offline installation cannot be executed. You must wait until those facilities are terminated.
  2. Ensure that the package information file is located in the same folder as the installation execution program, and then execute the installation execution program.
While installation is being executed, the Install package dialog box is displayed and you can check the installation progress.
If the medium is a CD-R, inserting it in the drive loads the program automatic operation execution file, and installation automatically starts.
You can also execute the installation execution program using a command format. For details about the installation execution command, see (5) Offline installation command (dmlinst command).
  3. If the installation results file cannot be output, select the output destination in the Save Installation Result File dialog box that is displayed, and then click OK.
If you click Cancel, no installation results file is output.
When the installation is finished, an installation results file (file name: dmlinst.txt) is output to the same folder as the installation execution file. If an installation results file already exists at the output destination, the installation result is added to the end of the file.

(4) Checking the installation results on the offline machine

Transport the installation results file that is output during installation to the managing server. Use a text editor to open the installation results file and check the installation result.

You can also use the facility for collecting inventory information to check the installation result. For details about how to collect inventory information from an offline machine, see 7.7.2 Collecting inventory and operation information from offline machines. If you installed a package on an offline basis into a machine connected to a network, you can also collect inventory information via the network. For details about how to collect inventory information via a network, see 3.2 Collecting software information.

The output format for an installation results file is explained as follows. The following figure shows the output format.

Figure 7-19 Output format for an installation results file

[Figure]

The installation result is output in one line for each package. The individual items are separated by tabs. The details of these items are explained as follows:

(5) Offline installation command (dmlinst command)

This section explains the dmlinst command you can execute on an offline machine.

Function
Installs the packages contained in the package information file (file name: DMLINST.BIN) in an offline machine. The installation result is output in the installation results file (file name: dmlinst.txt).

Format
dmlinst.exe [/I package-information-file-directory]
            [/O installation-results-file-output-destination-directory]
            [/S]

Option
  • /I
Specifies the location of the directory containing the package information file (file name: DMLINST.BIN).
If this option is omitted, the package information file located under the same directory as the installation execution program (file name: DMLINST.EXE) is loaded.
  • /O
Specifies the location of the directory to which the installation results file (file name: dmlinst.txt) is output. If an installation results file already exists at the output destination, the installation result is added to the end of the file.
If this option is omitted, the installation results file is output to the same directory as the installation execution program (file name: DMLINST.EXE).
  • /S
Specify this option if you do not wish to display the following dialog boxes during offline installation execution:
    [Figure] Install package dialog box
[Figure] Save Installation Result File dialog box
[Figure] Dialog box for displaying the installation result
[Figure] Dialog box for errors specific to offline installation

Example
In this example, the storage destination for the package information file is C:\Program Files\Hitachi\NETMDMP\DMPRM and the output destination of the installation result file is A:\:
dmlinst.exe /I "C:\Program Files\Hitachi\NETMDMP\DMPRM" /O "A:\"

(6) Notes on offline installation

Note the following points when installing a package in a client on an offline basis:
