7.2.3 Distributing the files necessary for detection using MBSA 1.2.1

To use MBSA 1.2.1 to detect unapplied patch information, you must first distribute to the client the MBSA 1.2.1 mbsacli.exe file for executing detection and the MBSA 1.2.1 database file to be used for scanning.

Use an mbsacli.exe file and a database file for MBSA 1.2.1 that are based on the same language. Otherwise, unapplied patch information may not be correctly collected.

For details about the packaging method, see 2.1 Packaging procedure. For the remote installation method, see 2.3 Executing remote installation.

Organization of this subsection
(1) Distributing the mbsacli.exe file for MBSA 1.2.1
(2) Distributing a database file for MBSA 1.2.1

(1) Distributing the mbsacli.exe file for MBSA 1.2.1

When MBSA 1.2.1 is installed, the mbsacli.exe file for MBSA is stored directly under the MBSA 1.2.1 installation directory. Package this mbsacli.exe file and distribute it so that it is stored in the following directory:

client-installation-directory\CLIENT\MBSA

To install the mbsacli.exe file into this directory, specify the following for Installation target directory on the System Conditions page when packaging the file:

To use MBSA 1.2.1 to detect unapplied patch information, you use mbsacli.exe, which is stored in the client's installation directory \CLIENT\MBSA. If it is not stored, unapplied patch information cannot be detected.

If the mbsacli.exe file is already stored at the client, there is no need to distribute it again. You can check whether the mbsacli.exe file is already stored by collecting system information from the client and then checking what is displayed for the MBSA system information item in Remote Installation Manager.

(2) Distributing a database file for MBSA 1.2.1

Because the database file for MBSA 1.2.1 is frequently updated, distribute the latest one to the client before unapplied patch information detection.

You can download a database file for MBSA 1.2.1 from Microsoft Corporation's web page. You can use the following URL for Microsoft Corporation's web page to download a database file:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/default.mspx

Package the downloaded database file and distribute it so that it will be stored in the following same directory as the mbsacli.exe file. If a database file already exists, overwrite it with the new one.

client-installation-directory\CLIENT\MBSA

If multiple database files with different names are present in the same directory as the mbsacli.exe file, the database file with the last update date is used for scanning. If there is no database file, unapplied patch information cannot be detected.
