6.2.11 Setup for collecting device operation logs and for suppressing device operations

You must set whether or not logs of device operations are to be acquired, and whether or not operations with devices are to be suppressed. The default is that all check boxes in this dialog box are not selected. Information provided in this subsection is applicable to clients whose version is 09-50 or later.

When you have finished specifying the settings, clicking the Finish button creates an operation monitoring policy.

  • USB storage devices
  • Internal CD/DVD drives
  • Internal floppy disk drives
  • IEEE1394 connection devices
  • Internal SD card readers
Writing to a Bluetooth device or imaging device cannot be suppressed.

(2) Specifying exclusion conditions

You use the Exclusion Condition Settings dialog box to specify conditions for excluding devices from being suppression targets. You display the Exclusion Condition Settings dialog box from the Edit Software Operation Monitoring Policy dialog box (setup for collecting device operation logs and for suppressing device operations) by clicking the Exclusion Conditions button.

You can specify exclusion conditions for USB storage devices, Bluetooth devices, and imaging devices. In order to specify an exclusion condition, you can reference in the Exclusion Condition Settings dialog box information displayed about the exclusion target devices (friendly names or device instance IDs). The following methods are provided for accessing such information:

When you connect a device to the managing server, a confirmation dialog box is displayed. The purpose of this dialog box is only to check whether the information read from the device is to be applied to the Exclusion Condition Settings dialog box, not to set the information as the exclusion condition.

When you finish specifying the settings in the Exclusion Condition Settings dialog box, click the Finish button.

(a) How to specify a Starts and ends with exclusion condition for device instance IDs

Starts and ends with is a comparison condition used for excluding device instance IDs that begin and end with specified conditions. The following example excludes device instance IDs that begin with aaa and end with zzz:

aaaUSBSTOR\DISK&VEN_XXXX&PROD_USB_FLASH_DISK&REV_4.70\0741BB312E000B13zzz

To change an exclusion condition from Starts with to Starts and ends with for device instance IDs or controller device instance IDs:

  1. Specify a Starts with exclusion condition.
Change the device instance ID displayed in the left-hand part of the window to a condition character string and then select Starts-with as the comparison condition. After that, click the Add button to set the condition character string as a Starts with exclusion condition.
  2. From Registered Conditions, select the Starts with exclusion condition that was specified in step 1.
  3. Specify an Ends with exclusion condition.
Change the device instance ID displayed in the left-hand part of the window to a condition character string and then select Ends-with AND comparison as the comparison condition.
  4. Add the Ends with exclusion condition to the Starts with exclusion condition (this changes it to a Starts and ends with exclusion condition).
    Click the Change button.
The existing Starts with exclusion condition has been changed to a Starts and ends with exclusion condition.

Similarly, you can specify an Ends with exclusion condition, add a Starts with exclusion condition, and then change the Ends with exclusion condition to a Starts and ends with exclusion condition.

If you click the Add button in step 4, the Starts and ends with exclusion condition is added while the existing Starts-with exclusion condition is retained.

(b) Adding conditions from a CSV file for setting exclusion conditions

You can use a CSV file to add exclusion conditions by specifying the condition type in the File Input dialog box. You display the File Input dialog box by clicking the Add From File button in the Exclusion Condition Settings dialog.

(4) Notes about setting exclusion conditions

Notes about setting exclusion conditions using friendly names
  • A friendly name must be specified as a maximum of 1,024 bytes. A device whose friendly name exceeds this length cannot be excluded from being a suppression target.
  • The maximum number of friendly names that can be registered is 100 each for USB storage devices, Bluetooth devices, and imaging devices, for a total maximum of 300 names.
  • If the client PC's OS is Windows 2000, a floppy disk drive with USB connection cannot be excluded from being a suppression target even if you specify its friendly name in the exclusion condition.
  • To exclude a device with two or more friendly names from suppression, specify all the friendly names on the device.

Notes about setting exclusion conditions using device instance IDs
  • A device instance ID must be specified as a maximum of 2,048 bytes. A device whose device instance ID exceeds this length cannot be excluded from being a suppression target.
  • To exclude from being a suppression target a device for which multiple device instance IDs have been set, specify all the applicable device instance IDs. Note that if you use a partial match to compare device instance IDs, it might not be necessary to specify all the device instance IDs.
  • Before you set exclusion conditions, you should display the properties dialog box for each device from Device Manager, which can be found from Control Panel by choosing Administrative Tools and then Computer Management. Make sure that CM_DEVCAP_UNIQUEID is displayed in Function on the Details page. Device instance IDs cannot be used to set conditions for devices for which CM_DEVCAP_UNIQUEID is not displayed.
  • You can register a maximum of 10,000 device instance IDs# each for USB storage devices, Bluetooth devices, and imaging devices, for a total maximum of 30,000 device instance IDs.
#: Sum of the conditions registered in Device instance ID conditions and Controller device instance ID conditions
  • Many Bluetooth and imaging devices do not support serial numbers. When serial numbers are not supported, a corresponding device is not excluded when Full match is specified as the comparison condition for device instance IDs. In such a case, specify another comparison condition, such as Starts-with or Ends-with.

Notes about reading device information by connecting the exclusion target devices to the managing server
  • If a device connected to the managing server contains multiple device instance IDs, a confirmation dialog box is displayed as many times as there are device instance IDs. If you want to add the device as an exclusion target, you must apply all of its device instance IDs.
  • If driver installation is performed when a suppression target device is connected to the client PC for the first time, a confirmation dialog might be displayed more than once. In such a case, acquisition of a friendly name might fail. Disconnect the device and then connect it again.
