3.3.3 Distributing user inventory items

To distribute user inventory items to clients, you must create and execute a Transfer user inventory schema to client job. Also, when you have edited a user inventory item, you must execute a Transfer user inventory schema to client job to redistribute the edited user inventory item to the client.

When you execute this job, you can add and distribute to the client the user inventory information managed by the managing server. This is an easy method for distributing user inventory items when it is not necessary for entries to be made at the clients. To be able to use this method to distribute user inventory items, you must enter user inventory information in advance. For details about how to enter inventory information in the managing server, see 3.3.5 Entering user inventory information from a CSV file.

(1) Creating and executing a Transfer user inventory schema to client job

When you execute a Transfer user inventory schema to client job, you can distribute user inventory items only, or you can add user inventory information that the managing server manages for each client and then distribute the user inventory items. If you distribute both user inventory items and user inventory information, the user inventory information managed by the client is updated into the managing server's information.

With the Transfer user inventory schema to client job, if you specify All lower clients or ID group as the destination, you cannot distribute managing server-managed user inventory information together with user inventory items.

The following shows the procedure for creating a Transfer user inventory schema to client job. For details about the operation and settings, see 8.2 Creating a job.

To create a Transfer user inventory schema to client job:

  1. In the Destination, System Configuration or Directory Information window, from the Execute menu, choose Execute Job; or, in the Job Definition window, from the File menu, choose Create Job.
The Define New Job dialog box appears.
  2. In the Define New Job dialog box, specify the job type, and then choose OK.
For the job type, select Transfer user inventory schema to client.
The Create Job dialog box appears.
You can display this dialog box after closing the Define User Inventory List dialog box or after entering the user inventory information in a CSV file.
  3. In the Create Job dialog box, specify the items on each page.
This dialog box contains the following pages and settings. Note that the Job, Destination, and Schedule pages are common to all jobs, but the Options page is displayed only when the Transfer user inventory schema to client job is created. For details about how to make specifications on the Options page, see (2) Settings on the Options page.
    Job page
Specify a name for the job.
    Destination page
Specify the host or hosts to which the user-inventory information is to be transferred. You must specify at least one host.
    Options page
Specify the user inventory item distribution method.
    Schedule page
Specify the job's registration date/time, execution date/time, and execution time limit.
  4. Choose Execute, Save, or Save and Execute to save and/or execute the job.

(2) Settings on the Options page

You use the Options page to specify the method for distributing the user inventory items. You can distribute the user inventory items only or incorporate client user inventory information in the user inventory items and then distribute them.

Note that the following check boxes are invalid for a UNIX client even if they are selected:

Notification to the client
Select Ask the client user for the information if you want a dialog box for entering the user inventory to be displayed at the client after transfer of the user inventory information. The next time the client is started, the dialog box for entering the user inventory information is displayed at the client.
No user inventory items should be omitted
To have the client user specify all user inventory items, select the No user inventory items should be omitted option. This setting remains valid until the client user specifies all user inventory items.
With this option specified, if the client user tries to close the dialog box for entering user inventory information without entering the required user inventory items, a message requesting information entry is displayed, and the dialog box cannot be closed until the information is entered. Note that this option is valid for clients of version 05-21 or later.
Disable cancellation of the client user
To not allow the client user to cancel user inventory information settings, select the Disable cancellation of the client user option. Selecting this option disables the Cancel button in the dialog box for entering user inventory information, making it impossible to cancel the user inventory information settings. Note that this option is valid for clients of version 07-50 or later.
By selecting both this option and the No user inventory items should be omitted option, you can ensure that the client user will enter all of the required user inventory items.
Even when the Disable cancellation of the client user option is selected, the client user can forcibly cancel the user inventory information settings if necessitated for troubleshooting purposes by pressing Shift + Esc + Delete.

Transmission data
To attach user inventory information for each client to the user inventory items to be distributed, select the Transfer user inventory option. The user inventory information transferred from the managing server also takes effect on the clients.
To distribute only the inventory items, deselect the Transfer user inventory option.
If you select All lower clients and ID group for the destination, you cannot select Transfer user inventory.

Availability of Package Setup Manager
To suppress startup of Package Setup Manager until user inventory information settings are completed, select Package Setup Manager is disabled at the client until the user inventory information is returned. This option is valid for clients of version 05-21 or later.
If you select Package Setup Manager is disabled at the client until the user inventory information is returned, JP1/Software Distribution assumes that the user inventory information has been specified if the client closes the user inventory information dialog box without specifying any information. To make sure that the client user specifies all the items in the user inventory information, also select both No user inventory items should be omitted and Disable cancellation of the client user in Notification to the client.

Data after finishing the information setup
Specifies the action to be taken after the client has finished setting the user inventory information. This option is valid for clients of version 07-50 or later.
For clients of version 07-00 or earlier, Client user decides whether to save or save and notify is applied.
Save
The specified user inventory information is automatically saved. The user inventory information is not reported to a higher managing server.
Save and notify
The specified user inventory information is automatically saved and reported to a higher managing server.
Client user decides whether to save or save and notify
A dialog box is displayed asking the client whether to simply save the specified user inventory information or save and notify by reporting to a higher managing server. The client user can select the action to take after setting up the user inventory information.

(3) Customizing messages

You can customize the message for requesting entry of user inventory information.

Save the created message in the following file:

%NETMDMP%\Userinv\uinvmsg.txt

If this file is not found or is empty, JP1/Software Distribution displays the following default message:

(4) Checking the execution result

The managing server monitors the job execution status at specified intervals and displays the status in the Job Status window. The Job Status window contains the execution status of all jobs. You can identify the type of job by the icon displayed in front of each job name:

For details about the information displayed in the Job Status window, how to display details for each job, and how to execute a job, see 8.4 Checking job execution status.
