11.8.3 Using the System Monitoring icon

To smoothly utilize the system monitoring, a client provides the System Monitoring icon ([Figure]). This icon is displayed in the task bar notification area and can be used as the interface for all of the operations related to the system monitoring.

When this icon is displayed, you can check from the state of this icon whether the system monitoring is running. A graphical change in this icon can inform you of alert issuance. You can also operate the icon to display Local System Viewer and check the alert details.

The figure below shows the System Monitoring icon displayed in the task bar notification area. This example shows that system monitoring is running.

In the default setting, this icon is not displayed. How to display and use the System Monitoring icon is explained as follows.

Organization of this subsection
(1) Displaying the System Monitoring icon
(2) Starting Local System Viewer
(3) Checking the system monitoring status
(4) Starting or stopping system monitoring
(5) Displaying the Conditions Settings for System Monitoring window

(1) Displaying the System Monitoring icon

To display the System Monitoring icon, take the following actions during setup and in Local System Viewer:

  1. Setting during setup
On the System Monitoring page, choose the Monitor the system and Display the System Monitoring icon in the task bar notification area options.
As the default, both items are cleared.
  2. Setting in Local System Viewer
Choose Tools and then the Display System Monitoring icon menu. In the default setting, this menu is selected.
To temporarily hide the icon or to show it again, choose the Display System Monitoring icon menu and change the check box status.

When these settings are specified, the System Monitoring icon is displayed in the task bar notification area. Note that this icon is not displayed in the following cases:

(2) Starting Local System Viewer

To display Local System Viewer, from the menu displayed by double-clicking or right-clicking the System Monitoring icon, choose Local System Viewer. This method provides a simpler way to access the Local System Viewer window than starting it from the program menu.

(3) Checking the system monitoring status

Based on the appearance of the System Monitoring icon, you can always check whether the system monitoring is running. Furthermore, because the appearance of the icon changes when an alert is issued, you can instantly learn of its issuance, enabling you to recognize alerts on a real-time basis even when pop-up messages are not used for alerts.

The meanings of icon appearances are explained as follows:

[Figure]: System is being monitored.

[Figure]: Alert was issued during system monitoring.

[Figure]: System monitoring is stopped.

When an alert is issued for an item for which one or more alert-processing operations were specified in the Conditions Settings for System Monitoring window, an [Figure] mark is added to the System Monitoring icon and the icon changes to the alert issuance state ([Figure]). In this case, by double-clicking the System Monitoring icon and displaying Local System Viewer, you can easily check the status of the item for which the alert was issued. For details about how to check the status of the item in Local System Viewer, see 11.8.4(1) Displaying usage status on the System Conditions page of Local System Viewer.

(4) Starting or stopping system monitoring

You can control system monitoring operations from the menu available from the System Monitoring icon in the same way you can control operations from the menu in the Local System Viewer window.

When you right-click the System Monitoring icon and select the Start System Monitoring menu, system monitoring starts and the icon changes to the system monitoring state ([Figure]). If you select the Stop System Monitoring menu, system monitoring stops and the icon changes to the system monitoring stopped state ([Figure]).

To start or stop system monitoring, you need Administrator permissions. You cannot choose these menus if you are logged on as a non-Administrator user.

(5) Displaying the Conditions Settings for System Monitoring window

You can display the Conditions Settings for System Monitoring window from the menu available from the System Monitoring icon in the same way you can from the menu in the Local System Viewer window. To display the Conditions Settings for System Monitoring window, right-click the System Monitoring icon and then choose the Conditions Settings for System Monitoring menu.

To display the Conditions Settings for System Monitoring window, you need Administrator permissions. If you are logged on as a non-Administrator user, you cannot choose the Conditions Settings for System Monitoring menu even if you right-click the System Monitoring icon.
