10.7.2 How to efficiently virtualize HiRDB file system areas
To efficiently virtualize HiRDB file system areas (and enable the HDP facility), we recommend that you create HiRDB file system areas and RDAREAs that satisfy the conditions described below.
- Organization of this subsection
- (1) HiRDB file system areas
- (2) RDAREAs
(1) HiRDB file system areas
Use the pdfmkfs command to create HiRDB file system areas, while satisfying all of the following conditions:
- Do not specify the -i or -a option.
- For the -n option, specify the maximum size that might be used in the future.
- Create HiRDB file system areas with character special files.
- Reference note
- Specifying the -i option initializes all HiRDB file system areas, with the result that a real disk that has the size specified by the -n option is allocated. This means that no virtualization occurs.
(2) RDAREAs
When you determine the initial size for RDAREAs, the method to use depends on whether automatic extension of RDAREAs is applied. For details about automatic extension of RDAREAs, see 15.8 RDAREA automatic extension.
- If automatic extension of the RDAREA is applied
Set the initial size to the minimum necessary size. For the extension method, apply the method that expands HiRDB files within the HiRDB file system area. When the RDAREA is automatically extended, only a part of the DP pool is used, equaling the extended size.
- If RDAREA automatic extension is not applied
Set the initial size to the maximum size you expect to be used in the future. In this case, when an RDAREA is created, a DP pool equaling the RDAREA size is used.
When the RDAREA usage reaches the maximum size, expand the RDAREA. For details about RDAREA expansion, see 15.3 Increasing the size of an RDAREA (RDAREA expansion).
