2.8 Application development environment

An application development environment is an environment where you develop applications that are to be operated on Application Server. An application development environment consists of an Eclipse environment where you develop applications and a debug environment where you conduct unit testing.

Eclipse environment

An environment where you develop applications. An Eclipse environment consists of Eclipse and the WTP plugin for Application Server. The Eclipse environment is set up when Application Server for Developers is installed.

The WTP plugin for Application Server enables you to deploy the applications developed in an Eclipse environment to a Java EE server in a debug environment, and to conduct unit testing.

Debug environment

An environment where you conduct unit testing for applications developed in the Eclipse environment. This environment consists of a domain administration server, Java EE server, performance tracer and web server. When you install Application Server for Developers, the default domain administration server, Java EE server, performance tracer, and web server are set up.

You can also create a debugging environment on a remote machine and then connect to that debugging environment from Eclipse on the local machine.

The following figure illustrates the configuration of an application development environment. This figure shows both the configuration for connecting to the debug environment on the application development environment machine and the configuration for connecting to the debug environment on the remote machine.
