2.4.8 Estimating the required hard drive space for Performance Management
After finishing other steps, such as deciding items to be monitored, the final step of estimating the required hard drive space for Performance Management needs to be performed. Performance Management handles the following three main types of data. The system administrator estimates the size of this data and prepares the required free disk space.
-
Performance data collected by monitoring agents
-
Event data indicating the status of the monitoring agents
-
Data required for running Performance Management, log files output by Performance data, and other data
We recommend that the system be designed with ample free disk space to ensure future system expandability.
The following gives an overview of estimating the required disk space for each Performance Management program. For details about required disk space estimates, see Appendix C. System Estimates.
- Organization of this subsection
(1) Required disk space for PFM - Manager
-
Required disk space for running the system:
This depends on factors such as the OS in which PFM - Manager is installed and the retention period of output logs.
-
Required disk space for storing event data:
The disk space required for event data depends on factors such as the number of instances of PFM - Agent and PFM - RM that connect to PFM - Manager and the number of events to be saved. In addition, disk space must be reserved for performing actions such as backing up and exporting data.
-
Required disk space for storing the monitoring result data produced by the health check function
This depends on factors such as the amount and data retention conditions of the monitoring result data in the Store database. In addition, some disk space must be reserved for performing actions such as backing up and exporting data. The required disk space also depends on the store method used by the Store database (either Store 1.0 or Store 2.0), which must be considered when estimating disk space requirements.
(2) Required disk space for PFM - Web Console
The required disk space for running PFM - Web Console depends on such factors as the OS in which PFM - Web Console is installed and the maximum amount of log data output by the system.
If the report cache file function is used, the disk space required for report cache files must also be estimated. The disk space required for the report cache file function depends on the number of performance data items that are displayed in reports. For details about the report cache file function, see the chapter that describes reports in the JP1/Performance Management User's Guide.
(3) Required disk space for PFM - Base
The required disk space for PFM - Base depends on factors such as the OS in which PFM - Base is installed and the maximum amount of log data output by the system.
(4) Required disk space for PFM - Agent and PFM - RM
-
Required disk space for running the system
The disk space required for running the system depends on factors such as the OS in which PFM - Agent and PFM - RM is installed and the amount of time output logs are saved.
-
Required disk space for storing performance data
This depends on factors such as the amount and data retention conditions of the performance data in the Store database. In addition, some disk space must be separately reserved for performing actions such as backing up and exporting data. The required disk space also depends on the store method used by the Store database (either Store 1.0 or Store 2.0), which must be considered when estimating disk space requirements.
