JP1 Version 12 JP1/Performance Management Planning and Configuration Guide

2.4.6 Examining Store database storage methods

Performance Management provides a database called the Store database, which stores the operation monitoring data collected by the monitoring agents. There are two versions of the Store database, and each stores data in a different way. The two database versions, called Store 1.0 and Store 2.0, each have different characteristics in terms of features, maintenance, and resource usage. For this reason, the system administrator must examine what storage method to use for the Store database when configuring an operation monitoring system.

Tip

PFM - RM can only use Store 2.0.

Table 2‒2: Features of Store 1.0 and Store 2.0

Category

Item

Store 1.0

Store 2.0

Functionality

Amount of performance data that can be stored

Maximum of 2 GB per record type (PI, PD, PL) per agent (instance)

Maximum of 2 GB per day for each record per agent (instance)

Retention period settings

PI records:

A retention period cannot be set for individual records, but can be set for PI records in general.

PD records:

A maximum number of stored records can be set for individual records.

PL records:

A maximum number of stored records can be set for individual records.

PI records:

Retention periods can be set for individual records.

PD records:

Retention periods can be set for individual records.

PL records:

Retention periods can be set for individual records.

Maximum retention period for PI records

Records collected on a per-minute, hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly basis are kept for a maximum of one year. Records collected yearly can be kept indefinitely.

Records collected on a per-minute or hourly basis are kept for a maximum of one year. Records collected on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis are kept for a maximum of 10 years. Records collected yearly can be kept indefinitely.

Viewing of historical data

Data from outside the retention period cannot be viewed even when present in the backup data.

Backup data can be imported and viewed regardless of when it was stored.

Maintenance

Backup

Allows backup of the entire database (full backup) only

Allows full backup of the database, or partial backup by specifying a number of days from the execution date (this allows backup of only the data that has changed since the last backup)

Database reorganization

The database must be reorganized periodically to delete invalidated areas

Database does not need reorganization

Resource usage

Number of files created

Few (19 files)

Many (for details, see the appendixes in the PFM - Agent or PFM - RM manuals)

Number of files that can be opened concurrently

Few (19 files)

Many (for details, see the appendixes in the PFM - Agent or PFM - RM manuals)

Based on these features, the following describes when use of each version of the Store database is recommended.

Situations where Store 1.0 is recommended:

Store 2.0 uses more system resources (in terms of the number of files used and the number of open files) than the database provided with Performance Management version 08-00 or earlier. Also, because of changes to some of the retention periods, you need to re-estimate the database settings as well as the disk space required.

In situations where changing these settings proves difficult, such as upgrading Performance Management in a system already in operation, we recommend that you use Store 1.0. By doing so, you can continue operation using the original estimates (for Performance Management 08-00 or earlier).

Situations where Store 2.0 is recommended:

With Store 2.0 you can perform partial backups of performance data and import the backed up data. This allows for the management of performance data over long periods. For this reason, we recommend that you use Store 2.0 with new systems. Also consider using Store 2.0 when Store 1.0 does not support your requirements in terms of the amount of performance data you want to store or the desired retention period when you are upgrading from version 08-00 or earlier.
