2.1.3 Overview of email sending

Organization of this subsection

(1) Overview of email sending (in Windows)

In Windows, email sending jobs can send email either with or without using Outlook. For details on the differences between these two methods, see 4.3.4(1) Sending emails using the email sending job in the JP1/Automatic Job Management System 3 System Design (Configuration) Guide.

(a) Overview of sending email without using Outlook (in Windows)

An email sending job that does not use Outlook sends data directly to the mail server.

The following figure shows an overview of sending email without using Outlook.

(b) Overview of sending email using Outlook (in Windows)

An email sending job that uses Outlook places the data in the Outbox folder, and Outlook actually sends the email.

After email is sent, it is stored in the Sent Items folder in Outlook. For this reason, Outlook must be able to send email to the mail server even when JP1/AJS3 is not running.

The following figure shows an overview of sending email using Outlook.

(2) Overview of email sending (in UNIX)

In UNIX, the email sending job sends email via sendmail.

The email sending job stores email data in a temporary file, and sendmail actually sends the email. For this reason, sendmail must be able to send email to the mail server even when JP1/AJS3 is not running.

The following figure shows an overview of email sending in UNIX.
