5.1.3 Installation procedures
This subsection describes the order of installing Performance Management programs on hosts, and the procedure to install programs from the distribution media. It also describes the procedure to install the PFM - Web Console program.
- Organization of this subsection
(1) Program installation steps
- Note:
-
For Performance Management programs, you can install monitoring manager, monitoring console server, and monitoring agent in any order.
(a) Steps to install the monitoring manager
Install PFM - Manager on the monitoring manager.
(b) Steps to install the monitoring console server
Install PFM - Web Console on the monitoring console server.
(c) Steps to install the monitoring agent
First Install PFM - Base and then install PFM - Agent or PFM - RM. You cannot install PFM - Agent or PFM - RM on a host that does not have PFM - Base installed.
If you install PFM - Agent or PFM - RM and PFM - Manager on the same host, install PFM - Manager first, and then PFM - Agent or PFM - RM.
For details about the installation procedure, see the appropriate PFM - Agent or PFM - RM manual.
(2) Installing programs
There are two ways to install Performance Management programs. One method is to install the programs from the distribution media, and the other is to remotely install the programs by using JP1/Software Distribution. For details about how to use JP1/Software Distribution, see the following manuals:
-
Job Management Partner 1/Software Distribution Manager
-
Job Management Partner 1/Software Distribution SubManager Description and Administrator's Guide
-
Job Management Partner 1/Software Distribution Client Description and User's Guide (for UNIX systems)
Notes:
-
If Performance Management programs and services are running on the host on which you intend to install the programs, stop all running programs and services. All services on the physical host and logical host must be stopped. For details about how to stop services, see the chapter that describes starting and stopping Performance Management in the JP1/Performance Management User's Guide.
-
Depending on the machine environment, directory and file names might differ from those indicated in the manuals. Use the ls command to check the correct directory and file names in your environment. When you execute the command that starts Hitachi Program Product Installer, specify the directory and file names displayed by the ls command.
The procedures to install programs from the distribution media for respective OSs are as follows.
(3) In HP-UX (PFM - Base only)
-
Log on as the root user to the host where you want to install the programs, or use the su command to assume root user privileges.
-
Stop all Performance Management services that might be running on the local host.
The services that need to be stopped are any Performance Management services running on the physical and logical hosts. For details about how to stop services, see the chapter that explains how to start and stop Performance Management in the JP1/Performance Management User's Guide.
-
Load the distribution media.
-
Execute the mount command to mount the applicable device.
For example, to mount the applicable device to the mount directory, execute the following command:
/usr/sbin/mount -F cdfs -r device-special-file-name mount-directory-name
Note that the command to execute varies depending on the environment.
-
Execute the following command to start Hitachi Program Product Installer:
mount-directory-name/IPFHPUX/setup mount-directory-name
Hitachi Program Product Installer starts and the initial window appears.
-
From the initial window, enter I.
A list of programs that can be installed is displayed.
-
Select a program you wish to install.
To select a program, move the cursor to the desired program and then select it by pressing the space key.
-
Enter I.
For a new installation of PFM - Base, the setting window of PFM - Manager for the connection destination is displayed. For an overwrite installation, first the existing information on PFM - Manager for the connection destination is inherited, and then the program is installed.
-
If the setting window of PFM - Manager for the connection destination is displayed, enter the host name of the PFM - Manager to be connected.
You do not have to set PFM - Manager for the connection destination during installation. You can set it later. If you do not set PFM - Manager for the connection destination during installation, the physical host name of the agent host is used. After the installation, change PFM - Manager for the connection destination. For details about changing PFM - Manager for the connection destination, see 5.3.2 Changing the PFM - Manager for the connection destination.
- Important
-
In this procedure, only one host name can be specified. If you want to create a multiple-monitoring configuration, do not specify the host name of PFM - Manager for the connection destination during installation. After you complete installing PFM - Base, change PFM - Manager for the connection destination.
-
Upon a successful installation, enter Q.

(7) Installing the PFM - Web Console program
To install the PFM - Web Console program, use Hitachi Program Product Installer stored on the distribution media.
(a) Log in
Only the root user can install PFM - Web Console from the Hitachi Program Product Installer. Log in as the root user to the host where you want to install the program.
(b) Start the Hitachi Program Product Installer
The Hitachi Program Product Installer is stored on the distribution media. Note the following when running the Hitachi Program Product Installer:
-
The device special file and the mount directory for the distribution media differ depending on the OS, hardware configuration, and system environment. Review the relevant manuals and your operating environment prior to starting Hitachi Program Product Installer.
-
Make sure that the language type used by Hitachi Program Product Installer matches that of the terminal where it is being run.
(c) Mount the file system
Execute the following command to mount the file system:
mount -r -o mode=0544 device-special-file-name mount-directory-name
(d) Start the setup program
When you enter the following command, the setup program installs Hitachi Program Product Installer and the autostart program for the resident process onto the hard disk. Hitachi Program Product Installer then starts automatically.
mount-directory-name/LINUX/setup mount-directory-name
The names of files and directories on the distribution media might appear differently depending on such factors as your hardware environment. Use the ls command to confirm the proper file and directory names, and enter them as they appear in the command output.
(e) Install programs
Specify the distribution media and start Hitachi Program Product Installer or the setup program. Place the distribution media for PFM - Web Console in the appropriate device drive.
Choose I from the main menu to display the following program installation window:
PP-NO. VR PP-NAME <@>001 PP-type version-number JP1/PFM - Web Console : : F) Forward B) Backward J) Down K) Up Space) Select/Unselect I) Install Q) Quit
Move the cursor to the program you want to install, and then select the program or multiple programs with the space bar. The characters <@> appear to the left of the program you selected. Once you have selected the programs you want to install, enter I again to proceed. The following message appears at the bottom of the screen:
Install PP? (y: install, n: cancel)==>
Enter y or Y to begin installation. If you enter any other character, the installation process is canceled and control is returned to the program installation window. You can also enter Q to return to the main menu.
(f) Display a list of programs
Choose L from the main menu to display the following window that lists the programs installed on the host.
PP-NO. VR Install date PP-NAME 001 PP-type version-number YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm JP1/PFM - Web Console : : F) Forward B) Backward Q) Quit P) Print to /tmp/hitachi_PPLIST ==>
- Note:
-
The Install date underlined above shows the time when the program was installed.
Choose P to output a list of installed programs to /tmp/hitachi_PPLIST. Choose Q to return to the main menu.
(g) Notes on installing programs using Hitachi Program Product Installer
-
The disk space required for installation is equivalent to twice the capacity of the product disk. This is to allow for data to be copied from a temporary work directory to the product directory.
-
The PFM - Web Console installation directory (/opt/jp1pcwebcon/) is fixed and cannot be changed.
-
The PFM - Manager or PFM - Base installation directory (/opt/jp1pc/) is fixed and cannot be changed.
-
Before performing an overwrite installation of PFM - Web Console, stop all PFM - Web Console services.
-
Before performing an overwrite installation of PFM - Manager or PFM - Base, stop all Performance Management services on the host.
-
If the installation fails with the message Installation failed in the status bar, collect the /etc/.hitachi/.hitachi.log and /etc/.hitachi/.install.log file and then contact the system administrator.
Because the log file will be overwritten the next time you start Hitachi Program Product Installer, make backups as necessary.
-
When installing PFM - Web Console to a linked directory, files and directories with the same name at the link destination are overwritten.
