Job Management Partner 1 Version 10 Job Management Partner 1/IT Desktop Management 2 Distribution Function Administration Guide

1.1.4 Job types for remote installation

After creating the packages for distribution, you then need to create and execute jobs that tell the managing server how to conduct the remote installation. There are three types of jobs related to remote installation, referred to as job types.

The following describes each type of job related to remote installation.

Organization of this subsection

(1) Install package job

The most basic type of remote installation job. Install package jobs distribute a package from the managing server to managed computers and install the software. Package distribution and installation are initiated by the managing server.

(2) Transfer package to relay system job

A job that transfers a package from the managing server to a relay system.

Packages transferred by this type of job are stored on the relay system. The managing server will not redistribute the same package until it expires. You can specify the expiration date during the packaging process. To change the expiration date of a package that has already been transferred to a relay system, you need to modify the package on the managing server and transfer it again to the relay system.

After transferring a package to the relay system, you can use an Install package job to distribute the package to managed computers.

You can combine a Transfer package to relay system job with an Install package job to perform remote installation from the managing server in two stages. In this case, the execution date and time of the Transfer package to relay system job controls the timing of package distribution from the managing server to the relay system. The execution date and time of the Install package job controls the timing of distribution from the relay system to the managed computer.

(3) Send package, allow client to choose job

This job only grants permission for a managed computer to install a package, with the installation itself the responsibility of the user. When you use this type of job, the decision regarding which software to install and when is left to the user of the managed computer.

Although the standard approach to remote installation is appropriate for software that is required on every computer, it can result in the installation of software that is of no use to the user. In this situation, a Send package, allow client to choose job might be the most appropriate type of job to use.

For details about the process by which users select and install software distributed by this type of job, see 1.1.5 Installation tailored to user circumstances.
