1.6 Notes on using Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

This section describes the notes on setting up and operating a system by using Application Server in Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista.

Organization of this section
(1) Operations that must be executed with administrator privileges
(2) Notes on using Unicode supplementary characters included in JIS X0213:2004

(1) Operations that must be executed with administrator privileges

This section describes the operations that must be executed with administrator privileges when using Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. Note that C drive is the system drive.

Installing programs

You must install Application Server products or component software, or programs such as Eclipse in C:\Program Files directory, with administrator privileges. Enter the password of the administrator account in the UAC dialog box that appears during installation.

Using commands provided by Application Server

You must execute the commands provided by Application Server with administrator privileges. Execute the commands provided by Application Server by using the "Administrator: command prompt".

Start the "Administrator: command prompt" by using the functionality provided by Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. The example of starting the "Administrator: command prompt" is as follows:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Select All Programs - Accessories.
  3. Right click on the Command Prompt, and click the "Execute as an Administrator".
When the administrator password or confirmation is requested, enter the password or provide the confirmation information in accordance with the instructions in the dialog box.
Updating definition files provided by Application Server

You must update the definition files provided by Application Server with administrator privileges. Even if a user without administrator privileges updates the definition files, the definition files in the directory under C:\Program Files are not updated. Files updated by users without administrator privileges are saved under the following directory:

C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore

Note that Application Server is started with administrator privileges and therefore the definition files updated by a user without administrator privileges are ignored.

Eclipse operations

You can only execute restricted operations for the directories under C:\Program Files or C:\Windows. When you save the Eclipse workspace for these restricted directories; the redirection functionality redirects the files to be operated, and saves the files at the following location:

C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files

The saved files are stored in the above-mentioned location; however, you can read and write these files from Eclipse, as if all the files were under C:\Program Files.

Using sample programs

We recommend that you copy the sample program provided by Application Server to a separate directory with write privileges, and then execute these programs.

When you install the default Application Server products, the sample programs are saved in the directory under C:\Program Files. If a user without administrator privileges executes the sample programs, the log files output in the sample programs are stored in the following location:

C:\Users\user-name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore

Therefore, when you use sample programs while retaining the Application Server products in the directory installed by default, execute the sample programs with administrator privileges. You must use "Administrator: command prompt" for executing the sample programs with administrator privileges. If you right click on the batch file from Explorer, and then click Execute as an Administrator, the operations are not executed correctly.

For the sample programs provided by Application Server see Appendix M Sample programs provided by Application Server.

(2) Notes on using Unicode supplementary characters included in JIS X0213:2004

The part of the JIS X0213:2004 third and fourth level characters supported in Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista includes the Unicode supplementary characters. Unicode supplementary characters are the characters other than the basic multi-lingual characters (characters with the Unicode code point in the range of U+10000 to U+10FFFF). These characters are represented as surrogate pairs in UTF-16 encoding.

The following are the notes on using the Unicode supplementary characters.

Notes on using Unicode supplementary characters in request

If a client such as Internet Explorer sends a request including Unicode supplementary characters to Application Server, the Unicode supplementary characters are not correctly output to the log or PRF trace. However, in that case, characters other than the Unicode supplementary characters are correctly output to the log or PRF trace.

The application operates correctly even if the Unicode supplementary characters are included in the request.

If you want to restrict the usage of Unicode supplementary characters in the request, determine the support in applications.

Notes on environment setup/operations

You cannot use Unicode supplementary characters in the definitions used for setting up or operating Application Server, or for deploying applications or resources.

The following are the examples of definitions in which you cannot use the Unicode supplementary characters:
